There should be a national dialogue in getting back to work

Even if New York’s plan and those put out by states such as Maryland come off without a hitch, they will take weeks, if not months, to ramp up, subject to any setbacks (e.g., a second wave). These states are coming to grips with the reality that much of life will not change to something approximating “normal” before we get a vaccine. You likely will not enter a store without a mask, sit in a crowded movie theater or restaurant, or fly on a plane. Before there is a vaccine, you might not go to a gym, the beach or a mall — no matter what the social distancing. If you are working from home now, you may very well still be working from home six months or a year from now. Moreover, your employer may eventually decide the business can lease half the space it currently does and have you work from home permanently.

Students at K-12 schools and at colleges may go through a full year in which they never physically meet a teacher or attend a school play or an athletic event in person. Instead of live theater, concerts and sports, we might get our entertainment in a pay-per-view format. Movie theaters were dying off anyway with streaming services and big home televisions; most of the rest may vanish as well. Don’t bank on watching a summer blockbuster movie in a theater. How many of these entertainment venues will disappear permanently is unknowable.

The entire premise of this is dumb and dangerous. There might not ever be a vaccine. It could take a decade or more; who knows. What we do know is that we cannot let this virus become an excuse to destroy the very freedoms Americans enjoy; to effectively rip up the Constitution.Hopefully , such draconian measures will be fought vigorously by the people. The next revolution might be coming if idiots like this WaPo writer get their way.

Having a vaccine by fall is very improbable even with all the resources now being directed towards it.

No, Foolio that’s not what I mean. . I mean state governments. Some have become downright tyrannical , in case you haven’t noticed. Freedom is not free, and we the people may have to fight for it again...within our very own country.

And when the people refuse to go back to work because it's too dangerous, then what are you going to do?

The meek and fearful can refuse to work and hide in a cave. It’s America, and they are free to do so if they wish. Personally, I have continued to go to work the entire time. It’s not too dangerous for the overwhelming majority of people. It’s not the plague. Most people are not cowards, as well. They want to work. Man will always fight to be free. We’ve worked and lived through much more dangerous and “ unsafe” things than the Wuhan virus through the centuries.

Nice words, but if people are scared, because they follow the science, then they won't be coming out, revolution or no revolution

Being that scared means nothing about science. It means you really haven’t looked into the numbers. You’ve been sold a bill of goods , Tibs. Stripping away of freedoms is far more scary than the virus.

Fear is a natural reaction to danger

Courage in the face of fear is why we have a United States of America; land of the free , home of the brave.

Well, and the fact pandemics almost wiped out the Native populations. Remember history, or we are doomed to repeat it.
