I'm an old person, and would be thrilled if only old people died from this virus. Unfortunately, young healthy people have died, and are dying from this virus

They have, just like with any sickness or disease.  But the number of deaths among the young/healthy is very rare.

We haven't even hardly started testing yet in this country. This is the very beginning. Test. Isolate. Get hospitals back down to more manageable numbers and not overwhelmed and carriers off the street.. Need test kits, ventilators, hospital supplies. Again, we are not very deep into this. I definitely think the season is in jeopardy UNLESS there is a vaccine discovered AND tested. That would be world record time for a season to start by September/October. Cannot have masses of people showing up for events. This is only the first wave and even IT has hardly started here. Once there is a reduction in cases, hospitalizations and deaths, I expect people to get lax and that's where the 2nd wave typically spikes.

By the way the "Spanish flu" may well have started in Kansas. (Per Wikipedia):

There have been statements that the epidemic originated in the United States. Historian Alfred W. Crosby stated in 2003 that the flu originated in Kansas,[21] and popular author John Barry described Haskell County, Kansas, as the point of origin in his 2004 article.[11] It has also been stated by historian Santiago Mata in 2017 that, by late 1917, there had already been a first wave of the epidemic in at least 14 US military camps.[22]

A 2018 study of tissue slides and medical reports lead by evolutionary biology professor Michael Worobey found evidence against the disease originating from Kansas as those cases were milder and had fewer deaths compared to the situation in New York City in the same time period. The study did find evidence through phylogenetic analyses that the virus likely had a North American origin, though it was not conclusive. In addition, the haemagglutinin glycoproteins of the virus suggest that it was around far prior to 1918 and other studies suggest that the reassortment of the H1N1 virus likely occurred in or around 1915.[23]

There are also legitimate, science based hypothesis that it started in China. Hard to say.

Cuomo just said the stay at home order in NYS is not something short term and we could be dealing with it for 4, 6 or even up to 9 months...

That would take us to near Xmas...the season is most definitely in jeopardy...

Here is my thinking, will young people really put up with that? Will he really bring in the national guard and maintain it with military policing? Will the country as a whole really stand for millions of lives being ruined financially? And a depression that will take years to claw out of? Because, in that scenario, with that timeline, that is what happens. I don’t see people under 50 who have around a 99.8% survivability rate doing that. I’m also not sure Cuomo will order troops to maintain that stay at home order at all costs. To include ticketing (people who already have nothing at that point) or arresting (and putting people in overcrowded jails).

I am a Bills fan living in NJ who also has season tickets to the Jets. I pay for my seasons over 4 payments and I received and e-mail from the Jets that they are temporarily suspending season ticket holders from making any payments for this season. Don't know if the season is in jeopardy but this move by the Jets says delaying/cancelling the season is a possibility.

Meatloaf, I'm thrilled to hear that there is a cheap generic drug that I can take so I don't have to worry about dying. What is it's name? Do you think I can order it on Amazon? Do you think cynicism and sarcasm will minimize its efficacy?

I would advise if you contract the virus to avoid chloroquine at all costs and see how you fare. Since you would rather be a comic than talk about real solutions. So have at it Mr. smarty pants, will you agree to forgo the use of this drug if it is made available to you?

Most viruses die in the heat so no one really knows.  The projections are all over the map.  I know the Governor in FL is about to shut down all non essential businesses, meaning only grocery store, gas stations, and pharmacies will be open.  I don’t think they can cancel doctors offices, but this will not only bad for us from a health standpoint, but I feel for those who don’t work, and won’t get paid.  I’m Catholic, and they closed all masses and churches in this area.

Then how are India, Pakistan and Africa seeing explosions of cases? Its already in the 90s in those places...

Call me an optimist but I think that young people are not going to band together to fight for the right to kill their grandparents. We don't have a choice on the economics. Whether its because we do nothing and people die left and right or we shut down for 9 months, there is going to be an economic disaster. As my not very bright uncle used to say, that horse has left the station and the train is out of the barn.

Here is some fun math. If you have the "normal" flu, you will infect 1.3 to 1.4 people. Ten layers of that means you infect 14 people. If you have this virus, you will infect 3-4 people. Ten layers later, you will have infected 59,000 people.

There is a cheap, readily available potent antioxidant that researchers believe is effective in their studies to this point to greatly reduce the chances of having extreme respiratory issues and/or death from COVID-19.

Apparently they have found this is the result of a huge inflammatory cytokine release  by the body in these people, mainly of IL-6. Astaxanthin helps regulate the immune response and lowers the inflammatory cytokine cascade thereby helping to prevent the more dangerous symptoms from occurring. Not a magic bullet to prevent you from getting sick but it may help to prevent you from getting severe symptoms. With its exceedingly stellar safety profile and low cost I would think this should something everyone looks into buying because $15 is a hell of a lot cheaper than a bill for a few weeks in an emergency room...or the cost of a funeral...

Your choice of words is very interesting. To say the least. No one is banding together to kill old people ?‍♂️  Those people can still stay at home while the rest of the work force goes out. It doesn’t even matter what I say, no one is putting up with a 9 month lockdown and staying sane. And, actually, we do have a choice on the economics. You might be well off financially. Or even relatively well off. But that isn’t the case for the vast majority of Americans. And if someone has the choice of staying at home and making zero dollars to add to his mounting debt load or to go venture out and try to restart his personal economy, the choice is simple. Unless, of course, you think the country is going to go 100% socialist in the next few months? Have the government hand out food, waive rent, things of that nature. You might not realize it. But millions of American lives are going to be ruined if this drags on. I don’t see them putting up with it unless forced.

With my limited knowledge, I think it is almost a  certainty that the season will be cancelled. I see no evidence to the contrary...yet. We are just at the beginning of this crisis now.  By the time we get through the initial infection wave that will move across the country, there will be some celebrities, athletes, etc who get ill and don’t recover. Those who recover can have damaged lungs from scar tissue. No athlete wants to take that risk to play a game. Smart owners also shouldn’t want to expose them to that risk either. I also can’t see NFL games without fans in the stands.

This isn't going away anytime soon.

I think even if the stay at home orders are removed, social distancing will exist until there's a vaccine and that won't be until next year.

I don't expect there to be any live sports this year. Cramming 60+ thousand people into a stadium doesn't seem like it's going to be a great idea anytime soon.

In the meantime this might be the best option to help ensure if you get it, you don't end up with respiratory failure, in the ICU and/or in a coffin...very potent antioxidant that helps the body "chill out" with it's immune response, which has been found to go haywire in people who develop severe issues, especially the inflammatory cytokine IL-6...

Either way its exceedingly safe and for $15 it is a hell of a lot cheaper than a few weeks in the ICU or and/or a funeral.

thanks, now could you please let the Italian government in on your info, where over 5400 people have died from the virus, out of about 59,000 cases.

Yep, people need to provide for their kids and feed themselves. If you are unable to do so, you get to the point where that is just as dangerous as the virus itself. Naturally, none of the people promoting prolonged lockdowns have any answers how we are supposed to deal with that. I understand the validity of the lockdowns, but someone needs better answers as to how this supposed to work over a long period of time.

they should cancel it.  Can’t be too safe, you know!

It's not that black and white.

Each day the country remains on total shut-down inches us closer to another great depression.  Businesses closing down.  People with no jobs or income, eventually resulting in losing their homes and being unable to feed their families.  I keep hearing people say that concerns over the economy are selfish and greedy.  I think that attitude is very short-sighted.  I also believe that some Americans are significantly overestimating the government's ability to feed and take care of them, if/when this whole thing crashes down.  Families may get a $2000 stimulus check once or twice.  Six to nine months from now, I seriously doubt it.

Although a significant economic downturn is pretty much unavoidable at this point, the magnitude and length will depend on multiple other factors.

And even if society doesn't return to normal 100% in the next few weeks/months, there are ways we can gradually get there.  And there are ways we can be creative to simultaneously keep businesses moving, and still protect the people most at risk.

As I said in another post, the concern about this virus isn't that everyone is just going to suddenly drop dead if they go back onto the streets.  When kept under control, the world is seeing roughly 5 percent require serious hospitalization.  That means that 95 percent of people will be fine, and our goal is just making sure they don't infect those in the other category.  As more testing kits are created, the easier it will be to determine who is infected and get them into quarantine.

Even if we don't get a vaccine until next year, there are other pieces that can fall in place to help.  The biggest problem is increasing medical capacity.  Meaning more beds and ventilators for patients, and masks for doctors.  There are major steps being taken right now to fix all of these problems.  If some treatment drugs prove effective, we may be able to decrease the 5 percent to 4, 3, 2, etc.  Less people requiring hospitalization, means less overload and a better chance people ultimately survive.
