Maybe he listened to recordings of his time in the announcing booth and realized he didn't have a future in broadcasting, so he might as well get as much money as he can as a player.

While I appreciate the OP's use of hyperbole, readers might appreciate knowing that Jason Witten is actually 37.  He will turn 38 in May.  Ben Watson, another ageless wonder at tight end played for New England last season, turning 39 on December 18.  He has now retired . . . again.
