U.S. airlines seek more than $50 billion from the government to deal with coronavirus fallout

A lobbying group representing the airline industry is asking the government to provide it with an unprecedented amount of aid to deal with the crisis. Every major airline has had to cut flights and lay off employees.
This is a developing story. It will be updated.

While this is a legitimate topic and one that I pondered starting although on a more general basis I don't think the OP should be the one to do it as it will be deleted if he does not like the direction that it is going.

might just be me, but should they have to sell those shares to remain solvent?

That industry has had problems since I was old enough to remember which is a long time.  But yes they should sell some shares but perhaps the fear is given their history that the shares will not be worth much especially at present.

Who knows if that is enough or not.  It would keep US households solvent short term (month) but at this point we do not know what the long term damage is with businesses among other factors.  When the stock market hit the wall in October of 1929 it took over 2 1/2 years for the DJIA to bottom out where it lost over 90 percent of its pre-crash value.  I suspect it will take years to know the true extent of the damage as the economy is much more complicated than it was in 1929.

Tibs, learn how to use the controls above every post you make. Or are you too lazy to  do that?

Or do you think that people will think that if it is bigger it's more important?

Works out to approximately 2,647 dollars per person assuming the US population is 321M as estimates suggest.  Of course the division is not that simple as not every person will get 2,647 dollars.  Much yet to be seen on this.
