We lived in Kenmore so we would alternate between Pats , Teds and Louies at the foot of Sheridan. Louies is still there, still one of the best but for this poll, I picked Teds as best.

Back in the day when I still lived there, I always thought Louie’s > Ted’s. Both were great though.

Whenever I come home, the first and last place I stop is a little hole in the wall diner in Lackawanna, right by the South Buffalo border called "Abbott Texas Hots." The dogs themselves are Salhen's I believe, so good, but nothing special. But their sauce is the best Texas sauce I've ever had. I always get 2-3 hot dogs, drizzled in sauce, and fries with a side of the sauce. I'd buy a jar, but the owner is very secretive about the recipe and won't let anybody have more than they'll need for a meal.

They are the continuation of Jimmy's Texas Red Hots on Abbott near Mercy hospital, a legendary South Buffalo hot dog spot during my childhood (he started it in the early 50s I think). The current owner of Abbott Texas Hots' uncle Gus worked for Jimmy and bought his secret sauce recipe when he started Abbott. Jimmy's closed when Mercy bought the building and expanded. Jimmy's was a block from Caz park, Caz was a huge party spot back in those days (literally hundreds of us on weekends) and Jimmy's was packed.

I've heard the legends from my parents. Honestly, it's a good thing for me that they moved. I lived a block away, so I'd be 450 lbs if  they were still there. I still went there a lot, but at least had to walk a mile each way to get one.

If you're ever in Erie or traveling through on the 90, try a Smith's. Theres a place right off the interstate called Lucky Louie's. They make a great dog with Smith's brand. Bonus, it's right across the street from the casino and horse track.

Same here... used to be Your Host but now it's Ted's and Gabriels Gate. Kind of lucky that there is a Casa Di Pizza (Elmwood strip) down here... they do Sahlens just like Ted's, right down to the Webers mustard.

The only thing memorable about Your Host was the jukebox link in each booth.

Pat’s was on Sheridan Dr. at Parker, southeast corner.  Another dog joint was on the southwest corner, but not Ted’s.  A Walgreens now stands where Pat’s used to.

I’m waiting for the Rochester area contributors to chime in singing the praises of Zweigel’s red hots and white hots.

Pat's, for the uneducated, was strictly an outdoor stand with picnic tables, open in summer.  The owners went to Florida every winter.  The competition with the stand next door (can't recall the name) was fierce but Pat's won by a mile.

Sahlens hot dogs are overrated.

My dad's theory is that they were the best at one time. They gained local notoriety. Realized they could make their hot dogs cheaper, and knew they were still better than your average Oscar Mayer, Ball Park, etc, and have coasted on their brand loyalty for years.
