New CBA likely to include 17th game and expanded playoff format...does this result in a lockout?

3 camps:

Reps who want the deal as is

Reps who will take the deal with tweaks

Reps who won’t take the deal

But the Reps can only advise the players on their team of their opinion...its interesting the NFL targets those who are the lowest ranking players but who are the most likely to need to play because they don't make enough to hold out...

I am not so sure I want expanded playoffs. I don't want the NFL to become like the NHL/NBA with how many teams make the playoffs. What are we going to have a 6-10 team making the playoffs. I mean 6-11 if they have a 17 game season. Keep it at 16 games and don't add more playoff teams. JMHO!!!

I read somewhere that they just want to add one extra team in each conference. So, instead of being 6 teams in each conference, it would be 7 and only the top team would get a bye instead of the top 2

How is the NFL targeting them?

Richard Sherman and JJ Watt should ask the tons of guys on their teams who aren't making 8-17 million a year what they think of the offer before they run their mouths on twitter about what is best for "the players".  Might get a lot of STFU from the "rank and file"...

Because they know they are the larger group of players so they can target them with a deal that will be more beneficial to the owners knowing those players don't have the means for a lengthy holdout.

That’s not targeting.  That’s providing the best deal for the most players who will benefit the most.  That should be the goal of the NFLPA in every CBA.

Ehh...its called going after the weakest links because they can't hold out for a better deal.

The point is that these are the guys who would benefit most from this deal.  That's what a union is supposed to do.  If it is ratified by the players, that will be the proof that's how it works.  Half the players make less than 860K a year, which is about the league minimum for vets.  That's not "the weakest link"......

The NFL has come up with this offer with the NFLPA art the table the entire time.

Shouldn’t the NFLPA be doing the exact same thing.  They are supposed to be looking out for the majority of their members, but they don’t.

The NFLPA is mostly influenced by the top 1% of their members - guys like Watt and Sherman - that will make enough money that additional health benefits and retirement and more players will have no impact on their career.  This is why they struggle as a union.  The rank and file players see things like lawsuits to protect Brady, but the NFLPA does not work to protect them in these cases.

The team reps are supposed to represent the wants of the 50+ members they serve and not their own interests.  This is why they keep getting beat because they are focused on the few not the many.  The NFLPA should be working on increasing the players percentages and upping the league minimum for all players and putting percentage limits on the top guys to make sure the middle tier players keep a job.  Putting in some type of veteran clause to help increase the average age of the rank and file and increase the money for the majority.  They should be trying to get a 17th and 18th game for the guys that will only see 4 years or less - you are talking about less than four games for a majority of the players careers and that extra percentage and the long term health benefits could be huge.

The NFLPA should have been pushing for the retirement/health package that the NFL put forth in the last deal that got nixed where both the league and the players take a percentage of their compensation and put it into a fund managed jointly for retirement and healthcare that could be accessed by the majority, but the NFLPA nixed that because it would cause a decrease in salaries at the top end rather than something that benefits 4500 players yearly.
