Could This Guy be a TE on Beane's Radar ?

So far this off season the Bills have brought in 1 FA TE for a visit in Greg Olson which according to some of those in the know the Bills are in contract negotiations with his group now to try to bring him to the Bills !

Seeing as McD likes to have a veteran in each of his groups if they happen to miss on Olsen i was wondering if Delanie Walker might be on Beane's radar as another possibility at the TE position to help the younger guys up their game & be the vet in the room ? He like Olsen has been bit by the injury bug in the past but has been a t one time a very good TE in the league .

He could probably be brought in on a good contract & it sounds here in Nashville as if they're not sure if they want to bring him back, of coarse a lot also hinges on if he decides he still wants to play or if he decides to hang it up after being put on IR last season .

I think the Bills have a lot of talent in the TE room already & given the fact that Croom is coming back this year i'm not really sure if they need another guy to add to this area of the team but given McD liking a vet i think he could be better in the area of production on the field in a limited rotation than Smith or Kroft & could be of more value to the younger guys .

Just wondering ya'lls thoughts if he might be worth a look or not ??

At this point in the off season, there is a lot of speculation and misinformation being tossed around.  I don't believe that TE is a pressing need.  When a guy like Olsen becomes available, it just makes good sense to kick the tires and see if you can make an incremental improvement in the roster.  If they sign Olsen, one of the other guys will become expendable.  In any event, this isn't going to be a big deal that alters the potential of the team to any great degree.

I just don’t understand the floating of these 30+ guys, when you could have a 4 years vet, 25 yard. Austin Hooper and ATL only has $5 mil in cap space.  He’s unrestricted and don’t have to give up picks, or big $, or worry about the guy getting hurt or wearing down as much as the guy mentioned above.  It’s a business, and whatever he’s done in the past won’t help now.

I think we have that covered already. Sad, but true.     :)

They already have one drafted in the 3rd round.  By the time you add in dead money to either Kroft and/or Smith, plus what the new person wants you're way over paying the overall TE group.  If they can sign Olsen I'd be OK with that as he's a short term solution, give him a year or two to coach up Knox and Sweeney , then he retires.  If Walker could be signed for the same money short term, then OK there too, but don't do anything that reduces Knox development time on the field.

Will Knox be at the top level, no one knows, though many here think they know.  Other than the drops this past year, he played very good for a rookie. Give him another year, lets see how the drops plays out.  If next off season still a problem, then look at TE's available then.

Beane has stated multiple times he wants to build through the draft.  Bringing in any type of player that reduces Knox's playing time goes against that.  I think any team in the league would tell you that they wand players drafted in the first three rounds to be starters, plus a few later round successes.  You don't then a year later make moves to reduce his playing time unless you already sense a mistake in the pick which is highly unlikely with him.

To use a term used more in baseball's front office you need to look at WAR, wins above replacement and by the time you sign the "star" cut whomever is no longer needed, and push last years rookie to the side, I doubt there's any value there, likely would be a negative gain whomever you were to sign unless a very low $$ contract.

The Bills TE's haven't roomed there much.

I, really, truly wonder, if other fan bases love the hope and has the expectation of a scrub becoming an all-pro like us

Croom is the new Mike Jasper

I agree, I think that the Bills interest in Olsen is more about him being a veteran that they are familiar with wanting to bring him in for a vet leader rather then them believing they need to upgrade the TE position. I don't see it as a position they desperately need to upgrade in their mind.
