New CBA to be voted on will include 17 weeks

17 seems to be a weird number.
Shorten preseason to two games, make the schedule 18 games. Work in 2 bye weeks maybe for players, or allow more players active on game days. I’m no schedule pro but adding one game doesn’t seem impressive

No more games, period. It is only a blatant money grab and does nothing for the game. Player safety issues at fore front for the past decade and the NFL continues wants to expand the schedule? Good old Billionaire greed, pure and simple. Sickening.......

Lol of course it's about money. OMG the overreacting is so funny. 1 game and they get rid of 2 preseason games.

Preseason is of value to see marginalized player get their chance to show their skills. But mainly, a preseason game is a kiddie ride vs. the best roller coaster out there. These games can't be traded equally. So stop with the shortening of preseason games, games the stars may skip entirely. Jeez.....

No it isn't since everyone wants them gone and half the team sits in the games.

You are the only person that doesn't want less preseason games lol

I can't tell if you are serious or just overreacting for fun.

The fact that Christian Wade played the way he did in the preseason, and still never saw the field in the regular season, proves the preseason is a complete waste of time when it comes to evaluating talent.

a.k.a. "a business".  It's true for both the players and owners.  If more games means more revenue, it also means higher player salaries (or perhaps more players, or both), and also more game-time fun for fans.  The obvious downside is diluting the meaning of a single victory, and by extension diluting the importance of each play.

Goodell is set on growing the game internationally, plus making money.

Afraid of this as even 16 games can seem like too many.  Just start a week earlier after three preseason games and make the NFL 18 weeks and each team two bye weeks.  Coordinate one of the bye weeks with a TNF game the following week.  You still get the extra money from the tv contracts.  Plus, adding a game every year will inflate this generations stats like they did when they increased it from 14 to 16 weeks.

I'm guessing there would be a neutral site game for every team.

Stempeded, that is exactly what they are talking about which makes the owners happy as it broadens the brand in Mexico, maybe Canada, or even a game in a large South American Market.  We all know about London, but the German teams in NFL Europe had the greatest draw so you could actually see a game in Berlin.

As far as pre-season, you shorten to two so the players are happy, and I bet the next step is they try to get in a third wildcard team for each conference so only the #1 seed gets a bye.  All of this increases revenue, and those saying it’s a money grab for owners, yes, but the players get basically half the TV revenues so their pie goes up as well.  I would add dress all 53.  If a team has players hurt they bring up during the injury however many practice squad players they need to maintain equity at 53.

They have said in the short term that isn't the plan. Will be an extra out of conference game and the home advantage will be one year AFC teams and one year NFC teams.

But in the longer term? Yea they want neutral site games.

I'd like to see them try this first. But money talks.

  • The 2020 season also would likely include an extra playoff game, pending the owners' approval at the annual league meetings in March.
  • Changes to the league's drug policy would nearly eliminate punishments to players who test positive for marijuana.

Well, those two changes could be really interesting...

The NFLPA has been on board with this....

"Mortensen’s report underscores the reality that, despite any public complaints from players like 49ers cornerback Richard Sherman (a member of the Executive Committee) regarding a 17-game season, the union has negotiated a Collective Bargaining Agreement premised on 17 games.  For months, the NFL and NFLPA have hammered out a deal based on 17 games. If the union suddenly tries to do an about-face, the two sides could instantly be on pace for a 2021 work stoppage."

Yes indeed.  Will be interesting to see what the players value more...smoking weed or "player safety" issues of a 17th game.
