Trent Murphy bonus

Love this message board.

we have a great defense and all I ever read is how Shaq sucks, Star sucks, and Trent sucks.

All these terrible players are contributing to a great defense. Maybe they aren’t really that bad!

I for one, am glad Trent is getting paid. He earned it, and keep it up!

They would really degrade the defensive line if this happens.  Have to re-sign Shaq; it was a "prove it" year for Shaq and he proved it.  Shaq was our best DE this year, Murphy was the worst.

What if Shaq reverts to year 1 to 4 form, after the 'prove it' year? That is not uncommon in the NFL.

That would suck, but I would have to believe that is highly unlikely; not impossible, but unlikely.  I'd take my chances with giving Shaq a raise, moving on from Murphy, and getting another DE in free agency.

I think it’s unlikely as well.
This staff seems to have unlocked something in Lawson maybe he didn’t know he had.
The Baltimore game sealed the deal for me. By far the best game I’ve seen from shaq. He was so disciplined. There were a few plays the ravens played their little misdirection behind the line and boom shaq was just chilling there staying in his spot waiting. Totally killed a few plays just by being disciplined. I think this team owes it to him to pay him. Nothing ridiculous but a fair market value. This is the first player homegrown, up for a deal, they need to set the example and reward someone for buying all in to “the process”

I don’t worry about him slacking after a payday. Those guys on defense hold each other accountable. The rotation has been successful even with Murphy eating a lot of snaps. One more guy with a pass rush into that rotation they’ll be pretty lights out

Because of Star and Jerry's contract we're stuck there for another year. But we can easily move on from Murphy and drastically upgrade him with Ngakoue. We'll also have to replace Lorenzo. Shaq & Jordan have to be signed to reasonable contracts.

A few thoughts here:

While cutting Star wouldn't save a lot of money, it's not prohibitive either. They'd get $2M in space from it; I do think it's unlikely though.

They don't need to cut Murphy to sign an EDGE guy. They have a ton of cap space.

Shaq and Phillips would have to be crazy to take anything less than top dollar deals this offseason. Both are going to be 27, both play premium positions, and both are coming off of career years.

Just look at Phillips' situation: how often does a 27-year old DT with 9.5 sacks at 340 lbs hit the open market? He should be looking for a ridiculous pay day.

He is the 28th highest paid DE in the league by aav. I don't hate Murphy but his production level is not up to his contract. He is a nice player to have as a rotational 4th DE. But he is paid starting caliber money. It is more about value vs. production. He isn't producing up to his value. I think they are better off cutting him and using his money to help off-set resining Shaq.

What kind of stats did the players around him in pay put up? I think people are being overly critical here.

It is all over the place, you have some guys like Myles Garrett on rookie deals who are beasts, some guys like Cameron Wake under performing and others like Matthew Ioannidis who is on a second contract similar to Murphy's who just notched 9.5 sacks. But if Murphy is commanding a top 30 salary at his position I think he has to be better than he was in 2019. At a top 30 salary you have to be a starting caliber player or a dynamic role player. Right now I don't see Murphy being an elite pass rush specialist or a reliable ground defender who can get some pressure. He to me is just a JAG who is getting paid a lot of money. If he was making 2-4 million I would love to see him as the 4th DE who can provide solid depth. But cutting him saves 5.5 million on the cap, money I feel the team can use to help resign Shaq and make other acquisitions easier.

We may have Alexander’s replacement already partially anyways with Vosean. He seems forgotten. Nobody is gonna play linebacker, edge rusher and special teams probably though.  I really like the Joseph pick as far as fitting into this defense.
Murphy is easy to let go, but I hope it doesn’t happen until preseason ends. They should either have additions in free agency and draft and be sure they’ll be ready to play well enough and don’t get injured before letting Murphy go or possibly even trading him which I think is missed amongst all the cut talk. Ol Trent might not have any value to us fans, but some team strapped for cash who doesn’t get to participate much in free agency then maybe misses out on an end in the draft may be willing to take him for a 4th or 5th round pick in preseason. If Beane can get a draft pick for fricken Marshall Newhouse I gotta think he can get a bite on Murphy who (knock on wood) stayed healthy this year.

You can't be elite at every position. He's as good or slightly better than replacement IMO. How much he gets paid doesn't matter unless it handicaps the team's salary cap. If it doesn't, then it's a personal issue between the fan and how much money another person makes.

But what if they could be using that amount of cash on a much better player or getting more out of a player for less money?
