Panthers Extend Shaq Thompson

3 things-

1- Darn it.

2- I wanted him, but I didn't see it as very realistic as I think McD is pretty happy running with a two LB set and wasn't gonna pay a part time LB that amount.

3- It's strange to me that they did this... I don't understand teams in the middle of transition doing business like this.

If I’m ownership, I know there are players wondering if they want to stick around for whatever comes next.  So if I have a guy I know I want staying, I’m locking him up quick before he can start to day dream about free agency

They may try to go offense for a HC and retool that side while maintaining defensive continuity. It makes sense if they’re just retooling.... Hard to predict though, especially with their current QB situation.

Yeah, it's just difficult before you know whose coming in, or what scheme they're bringing... If they hire a guy who brings a 3-4 defense, they're paying a pretty chunk for an off ball linebacker in a 3-4. Especially when you consider they're already paying Kuechly. It's not a horrible move, and I definitely understand it, just always puzzling to me.

Got to agree with this. Why not wait and hire the coach and see what scheme he wants to run.

Maybe the Panthers already have their guy, but he is currently coaching some place else and wants to wait till his teams season is over to make the announcement. Would be hard to believe in this day and age where everything gets leaked.

They can't really have a guy lined up at this point either (unless he's from College) as i think there are restrictions to talking to coaches while the season is ongoing?

I think We will probably have a decent investment put into Milano and Edmunds in coming years. I think we look to replace Lorax in the draft. Beane will find us another gem.

No doubt about it.

If I'm the Bills with Milano and Edmunds, I'm not even considering that kind of bank for a LB.

Not that rushing the passer is Thompson's role, but the guy has 9.5 sacks in just short of 5 seasons. Also one INT. I'm partial to playmakers. The Bills need to allocate a good chunk of their resources to edge PASS RUSHERS if we're talking about the defensive side of the ball.

I'm guessing a OLB will be in the 1st 3 picks if at all possible.

With Stanford probably leaving too I can see a decent FA LB also being considered.

So I absolutely get this. And to be honest for most systems I would agree. But if the Bills think McDermott and Beane are here for the duration then athletic linebackers who can cover are of vital importance to the construct and integrity of this defense. I expect Buffalo to pay Milano. If there was a coaching change for some reason that judgment would change instantly.

And I get that, but I don't know that Thompson is better than Milano TBH. Maybe slightly. Just don't see any reason why the Bills would be in the hunt for Milano's replacement considering he's still under contract for nothing next season.

Edit; didn't realize Thompson played SAM in this system. Still, just wasn't particularly interested considering we're gonna have to allocate big resources just to retain our own.

And I tend to disagree a bit in terms of what the Bills are looking for; Beane was clearly in the hunt for one of the big time DE's last offseason and I believe he will be again post 2019.

Oh absolutely agree. I wasn't arguing for that. More for the fact that they will likely sign Milano and Edmunds when the time comes.
