Hauschka responds to Bills waiver claim on kicker

The Colts had a higher claim and were awarded McLaughlin, but the Bills putting in a claim raised eyebrows, including those of their current kicker.

“I’m just focusing on my job and working on getting into a rhythm with Heath (Farwell) and Reid (Ferguson) and just blocking it out,” Stephen Hauschka said while standing at his locker Thursday.

Sean McDermott said the Bills are always looking to add players who can help the team and this situation was no different. Except that this situation is different. Teams don’t typically carry more than one kicker on a roster. Hauschka signed a two-year extension through 2021 prior to the start of the season. The 34-year old is No. 14 all-time with an 85-percent field goal percentage. But this season, he’s made just 71 percent of his kicks, which is 27th in the NFL.

“I know I’m going to be fine either way,” Hauschka said. “I want to get the ball through the uprights as much as anybody. That’s what I’m working on.”

I mean, I don’t really know how to comment on that, obviously, with what their intentions were there,” Hauschka said. “I don’t really know what their intentions were. I can’t speak on that. All I know is what I’m working on.

“I’ll probably want to know what their intentions were, but I think it’s pretty clear.”

This is an odd situation. On the one hand, it’s fair for the Bills to explore options at kicker. But is a rookie who has missed four field goals of his own this season an upgrade over a proven veteran working through struggles? Should the Bills be messing with their kicker’s head entering the final month of the season?

“I think you just have to use the energy to focus more and kick better,” Hauschka said.

The weather is about to get worse. The Bills play their final four games outdoors with two games in Orchard Park, one in Pittsburgh and one in New England. The pressure isn’t going away, either

House you are loved

Until you start missing kicks

What is interesting is this exact same thing happened with him in Miami...then he came to us and became House Money

Which means that player is still in there....but not motivated?

He came from Seattle.

His body language after that kick that bounced in said it all. I have nothing against Stephen and it appears it’s a mental issue not physical one. Hope he gets a couple to pop through and puts this behind him.

I agree.  His confidence seems low.

Really? That explains everything. They thought they were getting the guy from Seattle

Not I’m sure I agree. He used to boom them through the EZ on kickoffs. Not happening lately. I think he’s lost power so he’s swinging harder and with less precision

You're thinking of Carpenter there.

But otherwise, the situations are eerily similar.
