The best way to assure the Whisteblower's safety is to go public with his name.

But the reality is the media doesn't want to out the whistleblower because they relied on him as an anonymous source for much of the Russia garbage. So who cares if they make partisan impeachment a standard political tool to wield. There'll be no long term repercussions to this, right? Just like there weren't any long term repercussions to Reid changing the rules in the Senate because he couldn't beat the GOP.
