I just looked at SPOTRAC for Hughes contract: $14 MIL this year?  I am reading this correctly?

https://www.spotrac.com/nfl/buffalo-bills/jerry-hughes-6540/

WHY are the Bills paying Jerry Hughes $14 mil this year?!?  He's basically invisible that I can tell.

  • 1. Rams defensive lineman Aaron Donald: $22.5 million
  • 2. Cowboys defensive lineman Demarcus Lawrence: $21 million
  • 3. Chiefs defensive lineman Frank Clark: $20.8 million
  • 4. Lions defensive lineman Trey Flowers: $18 million
  • 5. Saints defensive lineman Cameron Jordan: $17.5 million
  • 6. 49ers defensive lineman Dee Ford: $17 million
  • 7. Browns defensive lineman Olivier Vernon: $17 million
  • 8. Eagles defensive lineman Fletcher Cox: $17 million
  • 9. Falcons defensive lineman Grady Jarrett: $17 million
  • 10. Texans defensive lineman J.J. Watt: $16.7 million

He may be the most overpaid D lineman in the league?

How does his contract impact you?  Why do you give a *****?  Are you just looking for something to B word and complain about?

Probably because it is money wasted that could be spent on a player that actually deserved it?  Hughes is good but he does become invisible and is too inconsistent for that kind of $$.

Bills will have $80 mil in cap space next year, they are 6-2, and you are complaining about one of the Bills very good players making too much?

Actually almost $90...89 and change right now

Because he’s good.  He’s been having a subpar season.

no, he’s not the most overpaid DL in the league

thread over.

he's not even the most overpaid pass rusher on his own team.

It's criminal how terrible Trent Murphy is, I haven't seen a more non-productive pass rusher since Chris Kelsey

Jerry Hughes is not a "very good" player.  He's had one season of 10 sacks.  A DE getting about 5 sacks per year is not a "very good" player.  At least he isn't getting stupid penalties any more.  I agree with OP.  His contract is insane and he is invisible on the field.  His only really successful years were when he also had Mario, Kyle, and Marcel (who was good at the time) taking much of the blocking.  He was 4th best of those guys during those years.

I have watched, hear, and read multiple times how the Bills defense gets very little pressure and almost no sacks from either D end position:  Hughes and Edwards COMBINED

have like 3 sacks, and the Bills have been playing a powder puff schedule.  They have also been giving up large number in the rush defense area.

He got paid in the offseason, and last year he was impactful.

The good news is that he matured and stopped getting a personal foul every game.   The bad news is he's lost a half step, but every team has players that are declining and overpaid for their contributions.   He's a good locker room guy, works hard and still chases plays down from the backside.

That seems a pretty good analysis.

I was thinking they may have to upgrade either position this off-season, but how can you when already devoting that much cash $ on

largely non-productive positions?

Hughes is already 31 years old, with 2 years left on that contact.

No you are not reading it right.  14 million is the cash he got this year.

Read the contract.

Jerry Hughes signed a 2 year, $21,500,000 contract with the Buffalo Bills, including a $6,300,000 signing bonus, $19,750,000 guaranteed, and an average annual salary of $10,750,000. In 2019, Hughes will earn a base salary of $6,800,000, a signing bonus of $6,300,000, a roster bonus of $1,000,000 and a workout bonus of $150,000, while carrying a cap hit of $12,950,000 and a dead cap value of $23,800,000.

And the two years he has left he is making 7.4 and 7.3 in 2020 and 2021.  So the extension got him  one year of double the money and then back to what he was making last year.
