I think it would be interesting to have him on the field along with Star Taylor and Phillips.

FIFY.  I'd like to see more of Vincent Taylor and less of Star.

I'm not sure why McD and Beane drafted Oliver to play a 3-tech if McD's scheme only works if the LBers stay clean.  Seems that a 1-tech would have been a better pick.  The DE's primarily rush the passer in the scheme with the DT's pushing the pocket back and occupying space to clog the middle run lanes.  It almost seems like McD wasn't sure what he had in his current personnel and needed last April/May.

Unfortunately Jordan Phillips has the exact profile that will underperform once he is paid.

Why do you say that?  Phillips seems happy to be here and wants to succeed.  I think he should get paid.

We can’t afford to give up all that production we are getting from Hughes and Murphy!  ?

I never expected much from Murphy, but I was hoping Hughes would attend a few games this year.

If we're not going to give Oliver as much burn at DT for the next few games then I would SURELY put him out there @ LDE instead of Murphy on some plays and see how it works out.

Oliver is in trouble. His ceiling was Aaron Donald. His floor was, well, I don’t know.

He’s an undersized, squat DT who hasn’t been super effective rushing the passer. I’m not sure what his role in the defense is at his level of play right now. Still extremely early in his career, but I can understand why McD is limiting his role.

I’d rather my pass rushing rookie DT get 9 sacks like Donald, or 6 like Dareus, not benched at 6-2 with the run defense imploding since the 3rd round pick last year got hurt.

I bet you $1000 you're dead-wrong.  You have ZERO idea what you're talking about.  Ed is a freaking ROOKIE!!!!   Why can't you guys remember that?  He's going to need a year or two to add weight, if needed, and develop his game more.  That's all.  You guys are ridiculous writing him off so quickly.  Your expectations are nonsense.

When did Oliver play more, in the first half when the run D was sucking like an open chest wound, or the second half when it miraculously got better?

He played more in obvious passing situations. I’m guessing most of that was in the 2nd half, but I’m not sure.

Also interesting that Hughes got 76%, Murphy 69% and Lawson 55% at DE. D Johnson got none.

Lorenzo does get some on DL in passing situations. Phillips 65%, Star 57%, Oliver 35% and Taylor 18% means L Alexander got 25% of the interior DL snaps.

Harrison Phillips may be the best interior DL.

Chicken/egg question: Are the inside guys less effective because the outside/edge guys are just okay (Hughes - good, Lawson - decent, Murphy - ?) or the outside guys less effective because the inside guys are just okay?

My take is that counting H Phillips they have 6 pretty good-to-good players, no real standout, no one that their opponents have to game plan for. In some respects it's like their group of WRs now.

Phillips is earning the time, Oliver hasn't been tragic but he hasn't been great either. I think for a rookie Oliver has earned some snaps but if a player ahead of him is playing significantly better you can fully justify lowering his snap count. I think Oliver should be used as a pass rushing specialist. It is clear to me that Ed (like other posters have mentioned) needs a full NFL off-season of strength training and conditioning to add a little bit more weight without losing speed. I think Ed will be a great player in this league one day but as a rookie he has had his ups and downs.

As far as Phillips I love the way he has played. But would I hand him a big contract? I don't know, honestly that's the kind of thing you have to be in the locker room to see how he has handled himself and hope that it was Miami that led him to being a malcontent and not his own nature.

My quick observation, Oliver was not missed, and Taylor was quite productive in his limited snaps (9): 3 solo tackles, and 1 for a loss.

Get him on the field!

I think there are plenty of snaps to put Taylor in there more while still having Oliver get passing down snaps. I would rather play Star a bit less and put Taylor in there.

The absolute hilarity in all of this is the people screaming "BUST!!!" after 8 regular season games. I swear the intelligence of some people on this board is borderline disabled.

And you believe 'busts' don't manifest themselves in their rookie year?  I believe that's an essential criteria of the definition!  Now, this is not to say that all poor rookie seasons end up being busts, but I think it's safe to say that all busts had bad rookie seasons.  Wrongly forecasting the future does not make people 'borderline disabled'!  It just makes them wrong.
