8 games in and the Bills control their own destiny to the #1 seed

Recommended Posts

I mean, technically, we do control our own destiny, but at the same time I think we can be realistic in recognizing we're not going to run the table. I love our team and how it's being built. I think we have our franchise QB. Our defense has shown some scary susceptibility to the run the last three weeks though and Levi has been getting burnt pretty regularly. They got it together in the 2nd half yesterday, but we have a lot of upper tier RB's remaining on our schedule. With Daboll calling the plays, having these "wtf" stretches in games, I don't see us being able to beat every team remaining on the schedule. I just don't. The defense is good, but can they continue to hold teams to 14-20 pts a game for 8 more weeks? I doubt it. There will probably be another couple performances where the offense needs to put up 30+ to win and I don't trust Daboll to call games where we do that, win a shootout so to speak.

Pats losing to the Ravens tonight seals that.

Buffalo is being overlooked by absolutely everyone as a good team.

But we've also beaten every team we were "supposed" to beat. Who cares how it looked?

Seahawks went to overtime against an inferior 2 win Bucs team with a turnover prone QB. Will the conversation be about how the 'Hawks are in trouble? Probably not.

Packers lost to the 3-5 Chargers today. They're still going to be talked about as a legitimate Super contenders and this game will likely be an afterthought.

Patriots have only beaten one team with a winning record: that was Buffalo and it was by 6 points in a game that they had a fluke ST TD and knocked our starting QB out for the entire 4th quarter. Tonight they got dominated like we did last week against the Eagles.

So that leaves the Ravens. We play them. They stomped the Patriots. But they also got stomped by the 2 win Cleveland Browns. It's not like they're unbeatable.

Wins are Wins and any team in the NFL can win in any given week, so don't overlook anyone!

Just keep winning Buffalo!!!

The difference? Those teams have a resume.  The Bills really don't yet.

It's a week to week league. Get the w against the Brownies and you're one step closer.

Good things happen when you play good defense, and don't kill yourself with penalties and turnovers.

Go Bills!

Oh for the love of God.

Can we worry about beating the Browns first?

Hasn't the 2019 version of the Buffalo Bills taught you anything yet? Like the fact that EVERY game is dog fight for them, no matter WHO the opposition is.

With that little margin of error every week, we have no business talking about "controlling their own destiny".

There is still a half a season left and even the playoffs are no guarantees whatsoever, never mind a number one seed.

Um, what exactly has come easy to the Bills to think that the Bills schedule is any easier than any of their opposition.

While the Bills have mostly taken care of business, they haven't done it the easy way, which means they could easily lose a game or two they should win because of how little margin they play with.

Also... if we were considering this a 3 team race to the 1 seed with the Ravens, Bills and Patriots, well here are their opponents remaining records, not including the games they play each other (meaning I'm excluding the Bills from the Patriots schedule, vice versa, and the Bills from the Ravens schedule and vice versa)

Ravens opponents: 45.6% win %

Patriots opponents: 44% win %

Bills opponents: 31.3% win %

That adds even more optimism.

At the start of the season the Bills controlled their own destiny, too.  When they were 3-0 they controlled their own destiny.  I'm pleased with their success this year but I feel like I'm watching my daughter drive on the freeway for the first time after she got her license.  You watch and hope nothing too bad happens, she gets home OK, and you wonder if the next time out maybe things don't go so well because it wasn't very pretty this time.

The OP's point is correct, we should feel good, and I do, sort of.  It is a whole lot better to beat a crappy team in a close game than to lose to said crappy team. Almost all teams lay an egg on occasion, so the Eagles game shouldn't be too concerning.  But, they've played crappy Giants, Dolphins, and Redskins teams, and weren't very impressive doing it.  The Bills barely beat the Jets, and won that game only when their MLB missed the second half.  They did beat a tough Titans team, but so have several others.

The biggest thing is, opponents have figured out how to run against the Bills.  Unless Frazier figures out how to stop that, there are going to be some losses that could have been wins.

I watched Edmunds a lot today.  The Redskins were running plays right at his spot.  Every time, he would run up to the line, leaving that spot, and plug a hole that wasn't there, and the running back would gash the Bills.  Over and over, he would disappear into the crowd instead of making the tackle.  I think, with his speed, size and strength, he should be a Sam, not a Mike.  He doesn't seem to have the instincts or recognition a  Mike needs.

Best line of the day, and maybe analogy of the year (do we give away that award here on TBD?):  "I'm pleased with their success this year but I feel like I'm watching my daughter drive on the freeway for the first time after she got her license. You watch and hope nothing too bad happens . . . "  Yuuup! If you've ever taught your son or daughter how to drive, you know the feeling.

I'm guessing you don't agree with the OP

I knew this was coming for the Pats. They haven't been playing as well as their record indicates. Brady has been chucking up some real duds every week. Ones that people would be bashing Allen for, had he thrown them.

It will be really exciting if week 17 decides the division champ.

But then, to finish the analogy, we would have remembered Josh Allen's 9 Super Bowl appearances and 6 rings and probably relaxed a little bit.

After we got gashed on the ground last week and then again during the first half this week with AP running through our D like a dodgy dinner at Applebees, I find it amazing that someone would give this serious thought. And then there is the " work in progress" offense.

Pump the brakes is the phrase that comes to mind.

Cant we just be happy they are 6-2 after a couple of tough wins and moving on?

The thought of them being the No 1 seed in the AFC has not entered my mind until this thread..

Funny.  After so many years of pure suck, the average Bills fan has extremely low standards/expectations.

I guess this is to be understood.

I wonder how many here would be perfectly happy with a wildcard berth and a quick 1st round exit from the playoffs.

"Progress!" they will shout.

A few things:

1.  Super Bowl is always the goal.  Getting to the playoffs is a prerequisite for that.  Ergo, getting to the playoffs is a good thing.

2.  The Bills do hold their destiny in their hands.  Keep winning and beat the Pats and the division can be ours.  That’s just fact.

3.  Despite the insane comments post-game, the Bill’s actually beat the Skins yesterday.

The Bills have as many wins this year in half the amount of games as they had all of last year. That’s progress. The Bills are an average to above average team right now. The NFL has 15 teams with below .500 records. The Bills wins have come against all below .500 win teams. Every win the Bills have had has been in doubt until midway into the fourth quarter at the earliest.

The Bills are getting better year to year. If the offense with all the new starters can continue to come together and get better the Bills can go on a run. This next game against Cleveland will once again be a chance for the Bills to win a tough game on the road. If the Bills go 3-0 and are 9-2 going into the Dallas game they will have a chance at the division tittle. That’s something we haven’t been able to say for a long long time.

Hey, I love the OP’s optimism, but like many have said let’s take it one game at a time. That said there are a couple things happening that could support his theory. First, at least against the Skins the D came back in the second half and held Peterson to less than 10 yards on the ground after he had like 99 in the first half. Vast improvement over the Eagles game where the running game onslaught continued until the final whistle. Secondly, maybe Daboll will finally now let Singletary be the bell cow for the running game and just spell in Gore instead of the other way around.

Both of these things along with a continued slow growth of the passing game and team play in general could manifest itself into a scenario where the Bills will be in the running for something better than a WC playoff slot.

Hey, it’s just the first week of November. You really don’t want to be playing your best football right now. Late next month is when you want that to happen. Let’s hope the Bills can just continue the slow assent and see where it takes them.

Here’s to the OP’s dream?! GoBills!

Exactly! The Bills were favored by double digits and won by 15. Who really cares how it happened, it’s a W. Seems like too many on this board would probably complain if they were hung with anew rope, LOL!
