Reasons to not feel so bad about Patrick Mahomes

When Pat Mahomes was lighting the world on fire last year, I found myself extremely aggravated that we didn't pick him at #10 in the 2017 NFL draft.

This year, I've found peace with the idea that he's not on our team and here are the top 10 reasons why:

1. With the first pick in the 2017 draft, the Cleveland Browns (who needed a QB) didn't take Mahomes.

2. With the second pick in the draft, the Chicago Bears TRADED UP to take Mitch Trubisky.

3. With the fourth pick in the draft, the Jacksonville Jaguars, who needed a QB, took Leonard Fournette.

4. With the fifth pick in the draft, the Tennessee Titans stuck with Marcus Mariotta and took Corey Davis instead.

5. With the sixth pick in the draft, the Jets (lol), who needed a QB, took Jamal Adams

6. With the 7th pick in the draft, the Chargers took Mike Williams instead of an heir to Phil Rivers.

7. With the 9th pick in the draft, the Bengals picked John Ross instead of Patrick Mahomes.

8. All of these same teams ALSO passed on Deshaun Watson.

9. Yes, we traded down and didn't get Mahomes, but we DID get Tre White and a future first round pick.

10. That future first round pick (combined with others) turned into Josh Allen, who at the very least has more upside at QB than anyone we've had in a long time.

Hope this makes you all feel a little better as well.

Another day, another excuse making thread by an apologist for the Bills' poor personnel decisions between 2001 and 2017.

The Bills  screwed the pooch by passing on not 1 but 2 great QB prospects for a DB prospect because they needed another top DB after allowing a future All Pro DB to walk away in free agency.  The DB they took is excellent but great DBs are literally a dime a dozen compared to great QBs.    That's the crux of it.

That the two QBs the Bills passed on have lit up the league while the QB the Bills drafted looks decent but has a ways to go to become even a consistently competent NFL QB only makes the original decision even more embarrassing.  That's the reality.  Deal with it, dude.

I really don’t think Mahomes is a “Buffalo kind of guy”. Josh Allen definitely is.

Why not?  Does he prefer ketchup on his wings?  Because he has a funky hair style?

Because it worked out so terribly for us? Top five defense two years running.

We got our stud QB.

And so far Mahomes looks destined to be another Peyton. Great offense that is consistently beat by more complete teams like the Pats and Bills and even the present day Colts.

Allen is closer to the next Cutler than the next Peyton. I’d take the next Peyton.

It did work out kinda terrible for us.

The NFL is figuring out Mahomes. He is nothing special.  Basically a solid top 10 Quarterback with a TON of weapons.

The Top 4 NFL Quarterbacks are Aaron Rodgers, Russell Wilson, Tom Brady, and Drew Brees.  Mahomes in in the same category as a Phillip Rivers. Very talented but defenses eventually figure them out.

Until Allen has even 1 game where he looks in the same ball park as Patrick Mahomes, I'll always feel bad.

Same goes for DeShaun Watson, but that doesn't hurt QUITE as bad, because we only passed on him instead of straight up giving the Chiefs a once in a lifetime QB (when we were desperate for a QB the entire time).

It's not just the insane stats, the records being broken left & right, the amazing awareness, the great arm that can throw effortless deep spirals (on point and at any place on the field), the decision making, the lack of turnovers, etc. it's the feel when watching the games that you can tell one guy just KNOWS what he's doing in almost every situation, while the other guy you're crossing your fingers every time you see he's sensing pressure... There's a chance he could escape it, but there's an even more likely chance he'll run around trying to extend the play, hold onto the ball too long, not throw it away, take a bad sack, run into a defender he didn't see (resulting in a fumble), or just lob it up & turn it over.

And when he does throw deep, the ball is often an ugly wobbler that almost always misses the mark, whether it's way past the intended target, or so underthrown it makes you question all the talk about his strong arm.

I don’t get why this keeps coming up. Mahomes is throwing to the fastest WR in the game and the best TE in the game, both have excellent ball tracking skills. In today’s loss Mahomes under three Hill yet again and Hill makes a great play to catch and score. On top of that KC has lost 2 home games back to back and Mahomes hasn’t looked all that great. The book on how to handle KC is now available, it’s time for Bills fans to put this to bed.

Really?

mahomes was 19/35 for 273 3 TD and 1 isn’t.

keep in mind 50 of those yards came off a pick play that should have been called back and another deep ball to Hill that was horribly under thrown and should have been picked but Hill made an incredible play on the ball.

I see no reason to be upset.

In 20 mins time of possession. Mahomes is in a league of his own.

He's definitely a special player.  He may be another Dan Marino though if they provide him with a subpar running game and defense the rest of his career.

What a sad life you must lead...so much angst, bitterness, unhappinesss...over a game, in which another team picked the player you wish you had on your team...two years ago...and transferring all that anger and resentment onto Allen...

You know, maybe it really isn't about a game. Emotional outbursts often are not about what they appear to be on the surface - but, instead, about something much deeper you just never dealt with. Find a good therapist. You might feel better.

Often into double coverage, and his receivers make plays.

But don't tell BigDingus that, he doesn't want to hear facts.

So Mahomes's otherworldy numbers are just him lobbing the ball to his WRs who bail him out?

Ummkay.

Yesterday's lob, by the way, was on an Offside free play so it was an excellent decision.

I agree. Mahomes is great and on a level few QBs achieve. He's just not ours.

Imagine how he feels about passing up on Brady 6 times!

That would be true of any QB that good. He had a great running game...until his RB went off the reservation.

What he really needs is an offensive line.

Yikes. It’s hard to find a worse comparison. Rivers has one of the worst throwing motions, Mahomes is silky smooth with the ball.
