I personally think the coaching and game plans have been spot on. Not predictable. Good mix of run and pass. Play designs have been STELLAR. We have plenty of weapons on offense, especally when Motor is back healthy. Meh, looks better if you add in his rushing TDs. Thats a big part of his game that isn't accounted for by those stats. I’m with you, give these weapons to a top 10 quarterback and they can have a deadly offense. As josh grows he can better utilize these guys. Daboll is an excellent schemer weekly for this offense. H2o Posted September 23, 2019 Share Posted September 23, 2019 (edited) Omg....Does Josh have....dare I say it......slow eyes? Seriously though, he does need to improve with his progressions. He's in his 2nd year and still growing. He has a bad habit of locking in on his security blanket right now, which is Beasley. Hopefully they coach this out of him because he left a few big plays on the field if he had seen his guy and been able to deliver an accurate ball. We all would love to see 300+ and 3 or 4 TD's a game, but it seems we go to sleep on offense for 2 quarters a game every week for some reason. Not sure if it is all on Josh, or if it is the play calling, or because of adjustments made by the defense. Either way our people need to learn to adjust on the fly or we will not compete with the upper echelon teams. folz Posted September 23, 2019 Share Posted September 23, 2019 (edited) When you have a team as good as the 90s Bills, you worry about stats...because you want to prove that our guys/team are the best at this or that. With a young, developing team like we have now, just get the W. I don't care, for instance, what Josh's TD to INT ratio is right now, as long as he wins games. He will eventually clean that up with more experience. The same with any other stat. If they get the win and learn from the mistakes, that's all that matters right now. With as young as they are and with the number of new pieces coming together on the offensive side of the ball (plus the injuries in camp and preseason to the O line, etc.), there was very little chance that they would be explosive early in the season. They're still trying to find out who they are as an offense. But, as the season wears on and the unit has played together longer, by mid- to late-season, we might see some explosiveness. And as always, put the team first. With everybody pulling together and getting wins, the stats and individual accolades will eventually come. I do not see coaching as an issue at all. McDermott is a great motivator and chemistry/culture builder. Plus, he and Leslie Frazier have the defense playing pretty well. And I like the creativeness, disguises, and misdirection that Daboll and his staff are bringing to the table right now. They've got stuff to clean up and build on, but right now, I don't think our offensive philosophy is holding us back. Give them some time to come together. Experience is the best teacher. I wouldn’t mind seeing less QB keepers and yesterday he did get too cute with the jet sweeps. I would love to see Allen and the offense put it together for an entire game and put up big numbers (preferably against NE). Our first half’s have started off strong but for whatever reason we look terrible coming out of half time. There are times where Allen makes ridiculous plays like Mahomes and I think he’s going to be the best in the league. Then there are times where he makes bonehead throws and I think he’s going to be another Cutler. Its an emotional roller coaster but it has been exciting more times than not so far. When Josh orchestrates a drive he usually stands in the pocket and delivers to an open guy and he uses the entire field. A lot of his next gen stats look good in terms of Y/A, depth adjusted completion %, etc. That type of stuff can be seen when you compare it to the style of QB we got from Tyrod or EJ. The thing with Josh so far has been eliminating TOs (which come on fumbles and one dumb throw yesterday) and putting a complete game together. With Tyrod we were saying he needs to learn how to use the field and throw across the middle and throw downfield more. Those all seem much harder to learn then learning to secure the ball more on fumbles and avoid some of the hero-ball stuff. It was the 2nd worst offense in the NFL last year. The good news is that it's moved up into the middle of the pack which is great progress BUT not evidence of an elite unit (top 10). The thread starter seems to be saying that Allen's play is holding the O back. I don't see that. Like the offensive stats overall, Allen has gone from being down near the bottom of the QB rankings to being in the middle. This is great progress for a guy who was called a "project" and has yet to play a fulls season of football as a starter. I love Frank Gore and what he represents for the ultimate classy professional football player. But he's in the twilight of his career; Singleterry is a rookie showing signs of being something special but is still a work in progress. and Yeldon is a below average 3rd string player. At this time, no one would look at this backfield and say it's dangerous. Beasley & Brown have been a huge upgrade at the WR position and their number of catches proves it. But again we had maybe the worst WR core in the NFL last season. Now we have a solid, middle of the pack group. Again, which of our receivers would scare an opponent in the way that the #1 guys for 10 - 15 other teams do? I think our TE situation is going to be fantastic in the future. Both rookies are players and Knox may be something special. But right now they're both still rookies developing their game. Knox is especially raw and just now learning the pass receiving game. Again, do people think our opponents are game planning these guys? Maybe by the end of the season they will be, but not yet. We had the 2nd worst O-line last season. The Bills have significantly upgraded this unit but right now they're at best middle of the pack in the NFL. If we didn't have such a mobile QB they would have given up a lot of sacks through the first 3 games. The improvement in our offense in all phases has been amazing and is a credit to the players, coaching staff and front office. This unit has made a huge jump from being at the bottom of the rankings. But let's not mistake this group for having the potential of being a high scoring machine - yet. They have a lot of work to do and that includes a lot more then just Allen. The turnover in personnel alone will probably take half a season to shake out. This is a defense first team. And frankly I've been pleasantly surprised by how well the O has played so far. If I'm going to complain about anything from yesterday it's that with the Bills still leading late in the 3rd quarter 14 - 7 the defense went soft allowing an 82 yard TD drive followed by a 60 yard FG drive. At home in front of a loud crowd an elite D should be able to shake off a terrible throw by a young QB and reestablish the dominance they had shown through almost 3 quarters of play. For the Bills to make the playoffs this year our O only has to be good. Our D has to be elite - at least in the top 5. if I have any angst after yesterdays win it's on the D.
