Maybe he wanted to stir the sh** in the hopes of getting Josh Allen to press and take risks.

Exactly. Or distract from the fact that once Eli goes out in an inevitable pink mist of bone shards and blood, his #2 QB is Dopier JJ Reddick.

It’s a very fair comment on josh as a prospect. Huge upside but raw equates to potential to be an Nfl starting qb. Very rare are the slam dunk prospects and he wasn’t that guy.

Not true.  QBs taken in the top 10, which JA was assured of, are guaranteed NFL starters. Shurmur was saying they had him as a round 2 prospect.  Only way to read it.  And yes, it’s disrespectful and a dumb thing for a HC to say.

It’s OK, Shurmur will be lucky to last the season.  Total mediocrity.  A walking advertisement for the Rooney Rule.

Yes this. I’m not quite sure what Shurmur was trying to imply, but I think u got it right. Honestly I don’t think anyone will be caring about what Pat Shurmur has to say about anything after this season.

Top ten will get a shot to start whether they are ready or not and many (most) do not establish themselves as nfl starters.

Would you call EJ, for instance, an Nfl starter when discussing the tier of qb he was in his career?

Here’s the point:  You don’t draft a QB in the top 10 unless you project him as a guy who will be a long-term starter in the NFL, although not necessarily as a rookie.  You would take a QB in rounds 2-4 if you think he’s only got a “chance” to be a starter.

Thus, Shurmur was saying, in effect, that they had Allen projected as a round 2-4 guy.  Whether that’s true or not, it’s a stupid and disrespectful thing to say about a guy who went 7 overall and who you’re about to play against.

Yes, I can tell by his lifetime coaching record of .300...a real genius.

When 50%(?) of top ten picks become starting QBs long term, I think you are overstating the expectation.

Obviously you hope your guy is the guy but the reality is that you are just picking the guy that you think has the best shot not the guy you know is going to make it.

If this slight gets you fired up on a Friday morning, have at it though.

Shurmur wasn't alone in his pre-draft assessment of Allen.  Most of the scouting reports (that we knew of) had him as a high ceiling, low floor prospect.

From NFL.com:

Prospect Grade

5.90

Chance to become NFL starter

Likely be the biggest boom-or-bust quarterback prospect in the draft. Allen's size and arm talent are prototypical for early first-round picks, but it's rare to find a quarterback with such a low college completion rate become a successful pro. Allen's receivers struggled to separate, but there were plenty of times where his lack of anticipation and post-snap plan did him in. Allen can make some truly special throws, but his ability to improve the mental part of his game will determine whether he's a good NFL starter or just another big, strong-armed guy.

But hey, if it gets the team fired up & Allen tosses 5 TDs, super.

Looks like Allen shot first a while ago.   I know it's bad phrasing by Allen but thought it was funny.

Mike Schopp drew attention to that quote on the air the other day.  He said it was his favorite quote of all time, or something like that .

Matthew Fairburn talked about the quote on his podcast and basically stated that that is how guys (non-scouts) tier QBs prior to the draft.

Could Pat have done a better job - yeah, but calling a guy pre-draft as a chance to be an NFL starter puts him in the top tier of QBs when they are making the evaluation.  I am sure they all have their own number grades also, but what he said was not the insult everyone wants to make it, but good for the Bills if it helps motivate the team for a win

What to me is more bulletin board material is the GM saying basically the QBs in that draft might be good, but he was going with the HOF player.  They had a shot at 4 of the 5 first rd QBs and a chance to trade and acquire picks and they rode it out with an RB.  Barkley is great and maybe the best RB in the game, but as we all know that will get you about 5 wins max unless you have a QB that complement that.
