Noah Spence, Treadwell headline visits today

Fans fixate on certain units because it appears there is a lot of talent there.  But the guys they brought in appear to be PS candidates.

It would take a "process" first or second round pick to agree to a PS spot. Probably some egos.

Man........all these visits.?

I thought the Bills roster was SO DEEP that their only problem was trying to protect what they had from the rest of the league.

Since 2014 or so I think this is the 4th preseason where there was major drama with numerous vigil threads among the fanbase about cutting players for fear of them doing well elsewhere.........and I'm not including last year because it was only Rod Streater and maybe a couple others..........not like the 5-6 players that people were sweating the loss of this year.

The reality is that the Bills don't treat the 53 man roster the way fans assume they will................they don't just keep the best 53.......it's more like they keep the top 47 or so and the rest they keep for a variety of reasons.......they keep tradeable assets(see the 10th OL)........they keep veterans who they have gone to battle with or who they talked off of the couch or a ST guy they think they NEED out of fear that the ST's will be sloppy in the first couple weeks.

The first two weeks of the season you should not need 53 to field a healthy active roster...........so expect a lot of wheeling and maybe some dealing with those inactive spots every year.......this is the new norm.

I love the idea of bringing in some of these big talent guys that didn't fit elsewhere...........nothing may come of it but at least it's fun to project a guy like Jones or Spence playing to their perceived potential in this defense.

We had at least 3 cuts picked up off waivers

beane is doing his job always looking to improve the roster

i like Spence

treadwell and duke are basically the same player

Nobody is saying the roster isn't improved. Unless I am missing the point..  and I could be... I have before haha... the point is don't fixate on the guys you see making plays in pre-season games. Because anyone who is out there playing a lot in pre-season is fighting for a roster spot and even if they make it they are fighting to hold onto it all season long. The fact that it is better to cut guys who could make another roster as those bottom end cycle through guys - Deon Lacey and Ryan Lewis are prime examples - rather than guys who will never see an NFL field again as we were a couple of years back is inarguable.

I understand the viewpoint and agree with it

and Beane has not been successful with this all the time just see last years ol and qb situations

to me this is how you find those guys who are not your premier players but might make a play here and there for you in case of injury

for instance I want Johnson taking those backup reps but Spence might come in and provide reps

Who do y’all think we would cut to bring in Treadwell or Spence? I agree looks to be Neal if we being in Jones.

I like Treadwell I think he got behind two great players in Diggs/Thielen and reading that article that was posted he seems like a hard worker/“process” the player

McDermott

Great piece. Thanks!!!

It is a great piece......thanks @PirateHookerMD?

I think it's pertinent with what happened here with Sammy Watkins too.

When Sammy suffered his foot problem Rex was very frustrated with him because he felt that he caused it by over training..........working hard instead of smart.

Sometimes dudes like Watkins and Treadwell dominate the guy in front of them growing up and they can get hard to coach and that costs them later on when they get challenged at the next level.  Ignorance gets you beaten in the pros........you gotta' be both willing to learn and know how to learn by then.

When the Bills drafted Sammy I was all about bringing in then FA Anquan Boldin to mentor him right then............it needed to be a guy he could both relate to and respect.........but instead the Bills went with an all-young guy WR corps under Marrone/Whaley and by the time McBeane wisely brought Boldin in they quickly determined,  much to my disagreement still today, that it was too little too late.

Wow! Rarely do I read one of these articles and feel I learned something, but this was one of those occasions. A very informative article. Thanks.

As for Treadwell, his physical characteristics remind me a lot of Duke Williams. Not sure there is a need for him, but then again, as the article reinforced, I'm a fan, what do I really know?

Liked Spence coming out. Interesting potential.

In addition to Josh Jones thread.

Spence is an interesting visit, my nephew played against him in HS and he is definitely a talent even though he has not been real productive thus far in the nfl.

Noah Spence seems to have a lot of talent and good skill set and size. Are his off field issues still a concern? Urban Meyer stated that Spence went all out at practice. Intriguing former 2nd round pick. Maybe he can get his head together and start living up to his potential.

Can he play LB?

Spence can play LB, but his lackluster play and the arrival of Devin White and Devonte Bond made him expendable by the Bucs. Spence is another high draft pick who didn't live up to his potential and never really flashed in Tampa. I don't know how much time McDermott has on his hands for reclamation projects, but he is obviously worth a look. Maybe he could turn things around in Buffalo.

If he can be put on the PS, why not?

Maybe the Bills can. The guy has an excellent skill set, but something isnt clicking. Spence had off the field issues, namely a drug problem, but it may be under control. If he could benefit from the classic change of scenery/system scenario and play to his potential, he would be a steal for the Bills

Why?

Laquon Treadwell has a past of being a featured player, putting up big numbers, and he has good speed to go with size; I feel always that players who haven't maximized their potential elsewhere, have a real shot at a redemptive story as a Buffalo Bill: the Jerry Hughes Effect.

If Tyron Johnson blossomed into a special player, I'd welcome it but would be surprised because of the little I've seen of him through  video clips; I'd rather take a chance on a player with 1st round talent, who hasn't panned out yet in his early career, than place hope in a less heralded WR becoming the next Robert Foster.

I don't think he can play as an off the ball LBer in a 4-3. They have tried him as a pass rush specialist OLB in a 3-4. He wasn't very good at that either.

I don't think he can. He was a 2016 draft pick and has featured in at least 6 games 3 times which I believe means he has three vested seasons. If a team wants to sign him they have to find a role for him on the 53. If he had been cut in June I'd have been all for bringing him in but given the play we have got from our 7th round rookie and the impressive camp he had I'd rather see him on the field getting some snaps in live bullets to try and develop him. Raw, small school guy, huge upside. To me if you are bringing Spence in it has to be at the expense of Trent Murphy and I don't see them doing that.

He’s not your typical “small school guy” and i never considered him as that raw. He was a 5 star recruit who played as a true freshman at Ohio state and started for two years before he was ineligible to play there due to the second failed drug test and had to transfer in order to play. Smaller school enabled him to play immediately without needing a waiver. His nfl success hasn’t been there but I think that’s mainly because he’s a one trick pony and his game didn’t evolve.
