Any interest in P Matt Wile

Recommended Posts

Ok we missed out on Colquitt and clearly McBeane are looking for an upgrade. What do you guys think about Matt Wile? The Vikes released him to sign Colquitt but I think Wile may be better. Some of you might remember his 70 yard bomb against us.

Colquitt actually was #30 in net punting avg last year so not getting might be a blessing in disguise. Just saying.

Where are the fancy stats for punters?  Averages don't really tell you a lot.  A kicker can have a short average because he kicks from midfield a lot.  They can have a lot fo kicks inside the 20 because they have a million attempts.  What I want to know is the number of times his kick accomplished what it was supposed to.  When you are backed up you want a high, long, bomb of a kick, when you are closer you want touch, with both you want placement to the called coverage. It doesn't help if you kick it 70 yards left when the coverage is called right.  It's not the punter's fault if they kicked appropriately and the coverage failed to tackle the guy, or if the coverage bungled downing the ball and it rolls into the endzone when it shouldn't, etc.

Bojorquez has too many shanks when you need bombs, IMO.  The variance from attempt to attempt (of the same type) is much too great.

Not a ringing endorsement...

https://thevikingage.com/2019/08/30/minnesota-vikings-final-53-man-projection-2019/10/

That leaves both incumbents keeping their jobs as Dan Bailey will resume his duties as kicker and Matt Wile will remain the Vikings’ punter. Both might be enough to make Minnesota fans and Mike Zimmer sick by the time the calendar hits October, but there just aren’t many alternatives.

https://thevikingage.com/2019/09/01/minnesota-vikings-add-colquitt-cut-wile/

After the Vikings claimed him off of the waiver wire shortly before the start of last season, the 27-year-old punter had a decent campaign during his lone year in purple and gold.

In addition to his punting duties, Wile was given the role as Minnesota’s holder on field goal and extra point attempts in 2018. He wasn’t the best holder in the world last season and the Vikings spent a good portion of this summer attempting to find someone different for the job.

Minnesota’s newest punter, Colquitt, actually has multiple years of holding experience at the NFL level and he has been described as, “a great holder,” according to the Pioneer Press’ Chris Tomasson.

A Michigan product, Wile entered the league as an undrafted free agent back in 2015. Four games split between the Cardinals and Falcons in 2016 had been his only regular season action, until he won the Vikings’ job last year. He punted in all 16 games for Minnesota in 2018, but clearly didn’t make that strong of an impression.

Good question. Sometimes averages can deceptive since they don’t take situations into account.

That being said the post above yours partly answers your question. You want a very small difference between gross and net avg. Also it is good to have punter with bombing ability - means he stand further back and won’t be blocked ( colquitt had two punts blocked last year) and he can get you out of a whole when you are pinned deep in the end zone.

And Wile was considered one of the most promising young punters last year ( he is just 26/27).

My were the Vikings trying so hard to get rid of him then?  They traded a 5th round pick for Vedvik in camp then cut him, then brought in Colquitt.  Wonder if he had been struggling there.  He also kicks inside a lot as a Viking which is worrisome. 9 games a year minimum.

Less about punting - more about his holding woes. Maybe someone else can hold for Hauschka. Or If we bring him into the practice squad and try him out and then see if he works out. He couldn’t practice holds much since he hurt his thumb - but appears healthy now.

Yards per punt is not the best way to measure a punters effectiveness. Net average is a more accurate representation.

If you punt from your own 45 but the punter puts it in the end zone, that's a 55 yard punt with a 35 yard net. Now if you can pin it down and knock it out of bounds at say, the 10 instead, that's a 45 yard punt with a 45 yard net.

Wile did do pretty well there. 11th in net average behind mostly who you'd expect - guys who have been the best for years (Hekker, Morstead, Andy Lee), the two Pro Bowl punters from last year (Brett Kern from TEN and Michael Dickson from SEA) and some younger guys just breaking into the league the last couple season who also look pretty promising (Sanchez from IND, Dixon from NYG and Johnston from PHI).

I think he's worth a look. But his holding troubles are worrisome
