Once Upon a Time In The NFL

The new Tarantino film shows the transition from from film to tv in 1969. I feel we are in a similar time where we’ve transitioned from tv to streaming. With this transition, will the NFL be as successful in the next 10 years or will it fade? Reason I ask is because my kids (generation z) and millennials don’t seem to care about NfL anymore (or other major sports for that matter). I’m starting to feel major sports will be like boxing in the next 10 years. It’s there, but not near as popular

Confirmation Bias.

Your kids aren't a big enough sample size.

There are hundreds of millions of people in this country, a lot of them that raise their children in the same values that they were raised.

Also, your 10 year window is very shortsided.  If you had said 25 years, then maybe, possibly, who knows?

It's somewhat of a concern and why the NFL continues to make offenses more prolific.

How is it evolving? By being on steaming more or in other ways?

The NFL still makes money by selling their network to the streaming companies. Being available on more platforms is probably a good thing..

Yes, in a way.

Mostly they’re expanding their market and making there product more available. The NFL is becoming less of a sporting event and more of a year round entertainment package. Look no farther than the new stadiums being built. These things are amusement parks. Or us. Just a bunch of sad sacks of crap with nothing better to do on a Sunday afternoon than discuss football.

The major way it evolved is Fantasy Football.

Millions of casual fans who couldn't name 3 Bills players are playing fantasy and a good portion of those are watching live

Its already a documented fact that less and less kids are participating in sports. Lots of this has to do with out of pocket expenses that parents are now required to pay for kids to participate in sports like football. Its been documented that kids today are playing football less.

I fully expect to see the NFL plateau in revenue / profit margins in the next decade, if it doesn't the only reason would be, IMO, because the game has taken hold internationally....  But I do see the NFL losing revenue in the years ahead.  There really is no room to grow revenues IMO. What are they going to do now raise ticket prices more charge you $20 for a beer. We are already seeing lots of fans who bought PSL's eating their investments. Maybe they would do something really crazy and try charging fans $99 to watch preseason games.

Football fandom is becoming very expensive . I can see many in the next generation cutting it out of their budgets ....

so we're calling them Gen Z now?  ok, whatever.

can't speak for NBA but the MLS increase is due to the 'individuality desire' of the generation.  with Social Media the way it is today they see just how 'alike' they are with others and strive to be 'different' and dare i say it?  MLS is just that, a convenient sport; there when we want it and forgotten when we don't care.

Additionally, the NFL isn't just about a sport, they have the biggest loudmouths in sports regardless of the topic, it can be anything and while there's polarizing personalities in the NBA they aren't as outlandish nor plentiful; some may disagree but that's how i see it.

i don't follow NHL but in my perception is they just "shut up and play"; maybe someone can opine on that.

I think the biggest issue with the NFL is there are too many game stoppages. The games need to pick up the pace and quit with so much dead time.

Back when the Bills played the Chargers in the blackout game, it moved right along because there was no need to stop for TV commercials. I'd like to see the NFL do that at least once a season, combine it with some throwback uniforms and call it a Throwback Game of the season. Pick teams with long standing rivalries, like the Bears and Packers. For commercials, do like some of the other leagues do, like NASCAR, and do a split screen, so you can still see the action.

I hate surveys like this.  It has no indication on how much they follow/watch their "non-favorite" sports.

Exactly. It might be that most people who chose NBA have NFL as their second favorite, but most people who chose NFL don't watch the NBA at all.

As an example, there were 9 million more viewers for the 1st round of the NFL draft than for an NBA playoff game the same night:

https://www.msn.com/en-us/sports/nfl/the-first-round-of-the-2019-nfl-draft-had-almost-9-million-more-viewers-than-the-nba-playoffs/ar-BBWl7DX

The NFL is in better shape than ever. I think social media and streaming options have actually benefited them quite a bit. It's easier than ever for fans to watch highlights and interact with each other and their team.

We moved to Clt in 98.

Nascar was huge( I hated it and hated listening to it)

It only took about a decade before it was an afterthought. This is the Epicenter  of NASCAR country.

Kids these days are weird as heck. They socialize on 3 inch screens and are overloaded with CGI. Dudes running around and catching balls isn’t what it was to those who got into football before computers.

I know this is a generalization but times they are a changing.
