Clarifying the Buffalo Bills roster status with running back Christian Wade

What I don't get is why they haven't been trying him out as a punt returner. And, to my knowledge, he hasn't been playing special teams, either.

There's no way they keep an RB4 on the main roster who can't play special teams. Even if they did, it would be Yeldon.

I like Wade and I'm enjoying his story as much as the next fan, but he needs to be on the practice squad at best.

Probably because you want someone back there who's been doing it for years.  It has to be very nerve racking when you can feel players barreling down on you, but you can't even for a second take your eyes off that ball coming towards you.  And even if no one near you, one muff can turn an entire game around.  He couldn't even cleanly take a hand off.  So no thanks!  Leave it to those with experience at this sort of thing.

What happens if they play him in games 3 or 4 and he breaks off another 50+ yard play? I have to believe a team would claim him.

Perhaps Wade is too green and that's why we haven't seen him on ST or getting touches with the ones or twos. Perhaps McD is trying to stash him and we won't see much of him again.

I don’t care what happens here as long as Bellicheat doesn’t get his hands on him.

I take a little umbrage with the idea that he just needed to follow his blocks and it was an automatic touchdown. Watch the play again. One could easily argue with his speed that he would have run in for the TD. But the DB had an angle behind him and was gaining. His cut toward the middle was what broke the last tackle. By then he would have had to blindly cut back to the right to get the escort blocks to the endzone and I don't think Shady or any veteran RB would have done that. By then he was already going to the middle of the field. It's likely that he could have outrun everyone to the endzone without the cutback but not a sure thing at all. He felt someone behind him and cut to the middle to avoid that tackle, which was the right thing to do if you feel it behind. If he didn't do that he may have been tackled from behind.

Yeah.  I just watched it again.  You're right.  Too close.  He just headed for open field.

Every NFL roster has an active 46, an inactive 7, and then the practice squad. Why not keep Wade among the inactive 7 and have him learn the game there? Who gives a flying ***** if we keep him over Perry, Yeldon, Murphy, McCloud, Wesley, McDermott, Love, Yarbrough, Lacey, Marlowe, Lewis, etc. on the 53-man roster? Players such as all of the aforementioned will be readily available as free agent/practice squad/waiver wire pickups throughout the regular season. Wade has elite athletic skills and is already 28.3 years old. How much more NFL career time does he have left? Put him on the roster and give him a chance to play in November and December when injuries take a toll.

I know Bills fans love longshots but he isn't making the squad this season

Yes he's an athletic freak but he's so green to the game he can't even take a proper hand-off

Both are plays can be a glimpse of the future but it was against 3-4th stringer's that he is physically better than

Let him acclimate and how a great chance at producing next year

No one else on this roster is capable of the two runs he's had at this point in their careers. For that reason alone, they should try to find a way to keep him and mix him in when they can hide his lack of football experience.

Wade was given an opportunity to play football for the Buffalo Bills. So far, he is earning his own way, so if he makes the 53 he deserves it. If he continues to play like this there should be no doubts.

Unfortunately, sports isn't always a meritocracy. I wouldn't be shocked at all to see them keep a guy like Perry or Yeldon over him even if he runs wild the final two games. Not one bit.

No it isn't and why defy convention right? Nepotism says sometimes ability alone is not enough! Better play it safe.

Do you have a link?

Why do some people have to see a link instead of just believing the poster?  Then, if they get the link they accept what is said by someone they may know even less?

Because there enough people over time who

  1. Make an honest mistake
  2. Make shite up
  3. Just want to troll.

There is not much to like when spreading wild gossip and looking the fool for repeating it

So you cant add him to the active roster.... But if a team tries to sign him off our practice squad can we add him to our active roster then?

The practice squad has 10 spots plus a special 11th spot for players  from the IPP.

If he is signed to the regular 10 man practice squad then he can be activated by the Bills or claimed by another team as usual.

If he is signed to the special 11th spot then he can't be activated by the Bills or claimed by anyone else. He just practices with the Bills for the year.

see,  that ^ is the  issue that I think people are missing

If he's allocated to the PS (I'm 99.99999% sure) it will be as the 11th PS player.

People need to pump the freaking breaks on this kid... he's making these big plays against guys who flat out WILL NOT be on 53 man rosters... and neither will he.

He's been fun to watch with 2 big plays, and I get it, he's a great story, but this guy is flat out not ready for the NFL. He doesn't play special teams, he doesn't know the ins and outs of playing the RB position, he can't block, he doesn't follow blocks when running, honestly how is this even a discussion????

I hope this kid does put it all together to make a name for himself in the NFL in 2020... but he's as raw as they come, and he WILL get through waivers because no team is going to want to put the amount of time and effort into getting this guy up to NFL Speed while carrying him on their 53 man roster. You need guys who can contribute NOW if you're going to be on the 53, and Wade doesn't have the value to be kept on an active roster. Not by the Bills and not by any of the other 31 teams.

Wade is a a great story and a project who COULD become something worth while on a 53 man roster once he learns how to do all the things RBs need to know... but he's a developmental project. Time on our PS would be INVALUABLE, as we don't need to use up a PS spot for him, and then he gets time to learn with the rest of the guys and get reps in practice. If there was a farm system I'd say send him down, but since there isn't, the only thing for him is the PS.

People need to stop being so carried away... let's not forget Nathan Peterman statistically is one of the best QBs int he NFL right now during pre-season, but we all saw what a tire fire of a player he is against real NFL talent.

Wade isn't ready, and wasting a roster spot on him is flat out stupid.
