Welcome! It’s nice to get a report from someone who has followed Christian. I like what I hear, and I loved not just his one big play, but also his rugby highlights. Good stuff! (I played rugby in college and have an appreciation for play at that level. WOW stuff!)

But the other reason I’m posting this to our new friend Bargepole is to tell you how you and our dear @ExiledInIllinois just might become fast friends!

?

It took me a while to figure it... But 30 seconds later I think I finally got it!

?

@bargepole : "Good answer, good answer, like the way you think, I am gonna be watching you..."

Yes, I said he was 28 earlier. That means he's only 2 years away from teams doubting his abilities.

And what does this have to do with this year or the next? It’s not like you spent a high draft pick on the guy. He’s FREE! Get what you can out of him.

I’m not advocating for keeping him, more curious to see more and behind the concept of using free (in terms of acquisition cost) and cheap  talent. Why not?

I’ll rain on the parade. Wade has zero chance of making the active roster this year.  I doubt he’ll ever make an active roster.

Its a a great story and I admire the hell out of Wade for walking away from a sport he was fantastic at to start at the bottom in a totally new sport...but being a great athlete isn’t nearly enough to make a roster. The NFL is full of world class athletes who have played the sport their entire lives.

Throw Gurley or Zeke or any top tier RB into rugby and they’d have zero chance of making a team too.

I wouldn't say it's forever impossible. 99.9% for this year, yes. But with a year on the PS, he could make it as a return specialist/gunner/4th-RB-gadget player. The dude is a bona fide blue-chip athlete from his brain down to his toes, and he has the kind of vision that only the best of the best possess - and that can't be taught. If Joe Webb can make an NFL roster, I don't see why Wade can't.

Yep, never say never.

Wait, did I.......

What you quoted only stated that if they are placed on the practice squad they can't be activated. It didn't say they couldn't make the 53 man roster.

I really must be misunderstanding then.  I'll post the quote again:

The four AFC East clubs will carry these overseas players on their roster until the end of training camp. At that time, the players are eligible for an international player practice squad exemption, granting them an eleventh practice squad member that is ineligible to be activated during the 2019 season.

I bolded the part that makes me believe they cannot be on the 53-man roster.

My understanding is that being activated from the practice squad = being placed on the 53-man roster.

It also specifies that at the end of training came, they are eligible for the 11th (extra) PS spot.

No, that just means that if they are placed on the PS using a protected spot, they cannot be activated.  I makes no sense to disallow them from making the 53-man roster outright considering the purpose of this program is to get them to eventually make a 53-man roster.

He won't make the 53 b.c he isn't good enough.

At least you have an honest opinion...everyone seems to have such a guarded response because we have seen so little of Wade to determine anything.

Doc - The way I'm interpreting it, is that they'll be on the PS for an entire season to expose them to the NFL and prepare them for a possible roster spot the following season.

Boca - This (to me) really isn't about Wade making the Bills' 53 (I don't think there is a chance in hell).  It's more about whether it's even within the rules for a International  Player Pathway Program participant to make any team's 53.

I think it's a one-year program that caps them at PS.

Yes they can only make the PS the first year and than next year can make the 53. The PS will have an extra spot for IPPP players so you don't lose out on your normal PS number.

That's exactly how I understand it.  I think we're in minority.

Nothing. Someone claimed he was young so I told them he wasn't. That is all.

Right now there is no practice squad. In order to be activated, he would have to first be on the practice squad, which only happens after the preseason. If he makes the 53 he'll never have been on the practice squad and will not be activated to the 53, just make it outright.

As I read it.  He can make the team.

But

If he’s put on the PS as the 11th then has to stay on the PS

Yeah .... now I think I'm understanding it the same as you.  The NFL.com explanation was useless (go figure .. it's just THEIR ***** program).

Much clearer explanation here: https://www.telegraph.co.uk/american-football/2019/04/10/can-christian-wade-make-nfl-case-against-former-rugby-star/

"Wade, who quit rugby to pursue a career in the NFL last year, will now have an opportunity to make the Bills' final 53-man roster for the season. If he fails, the Bills will be allowed to keep him as an extra 11th player on their practice squad (teams are normally allowed 10), but he will be exempt from playing actual games."

The International Player Pathway Program was instituted in 2017 and aims to provide international athletes the opportunity to compete at the NFL level, improve their skills, and ultimately earn a spot on an NFL roster.

Clear as mud

There ya go!

It doesn't make sense that he can't make the active roster.  The idea is for these guys to make the roster.  If they show enough to make it their first year, why not let them?

He made ONE great run.in our FIRST game.  He has talent, he could be great, but he's 28.

If we get to the end of preseason, and  he's still showing that talent, then he will make the team.  Considering his age, It's either make the team or not.  Putting a 28 year old on the PS, for one season, would be a bit unfair.
