Bills Training Camp Day 7 - 8/1

Its funny: While most Bills fans' attention has been on Duke Williams and David Sills at the WR position, two guys NO ONE was paying attention to or cared about or expected anything from -- McCloud and Roberts -- have been turning heads.

You just never know.

Roberts contributing in the passing game is awesome, because as the primary kick returner, his roster spot was pretty much guaranteed. There have been plenty of return specialists over the years (the majority, I'd say), who don't contribute at all on offense. Roberts doing so would just be great.

As for McCloud, well...everybody who thought he'd come into year two bulked up, quicker, with better technique, and ready to steal a roster spot, raise your hand. Nobody? That's what I thought.

I’m on record as a Ray Ray hater. But if he’s improved, more power to him. He’s the 6th WR at the moment.

Hadn't been to any of the other practices, but had read all the reports that Allen was looking good this camp, and was really looking forward to seeing how he'd improved.  He looked good in the 1v1 drills, but was very underwhelming in the 11v11 portion.  And was glad to read that people who were at all 5 or 6 other practices said he looked much worse today than he had previously.  Because today was not good.  So am more hopeful for the season now than when walking out of Polisini Stadium.

At least 90% of the 11v11 drills were from inside the 10, so almost any completion was going to be a TD.  (And pretty sure 3 of those 5 TDs were little 2 yard crossing routes that the receiver ( at least twice Beasley) took the 6 yards himself.

But Oliver was dominant.  And Poyer had a serious hit on a "welcome to the NFL kid" shot on Singletary.  'Pads, we don't need no stinking pads.'

Ray Ray was pretty noticeable too.

And Singletary will be a good one.

I just felt that with Beasley on the roster, Ray Ray's skillset would be redundant. I felt the Bills were looking for a "size, catch radius" option to complement the smurf corps. Looks like I was wrong. All they seem to care about with their receivers is "can you gain separation?" and "can you catch the ball?". With that in mind, they don't seem to view having guys with size as being particularly necessary. The only place I see this POTENTIALLY being an issue is in the red zone. But you know what? The Patriots don't seem to have a problem converting in the red zone, and they don't do it with big WRs. I realize we don't have Tom Brady behind center, but we DO run the Patriots offense, more or less.

TE is a sore subject (no pun intended) right now but depending on how they use those guys, WR size isn’t a big issue. Plus Foster is 6’2

Not true. Either in the you want a TD on every pass ( any more than you normally do) and especially 13 TDs in 19 passes. That's more outrageous than commenting on the 5. Granted, stats in practice is stupid, sure. But the posters were commenting that if you're going to print stats in practice to show how poorly Josh was playing today, why don't you mention the 5 TDs in those stats.

Well I guess it depends how many of those TD's were in the garbage time portion of practice. :)

Anyone else a little concerned that Josh is throwing a stupid amount of batted balls the last few practices? It’s like he’s aiming for the Dline. I don’t recall this being a problem last year.

..agree bud....Mac showed up and immediately went to work....Ray-Ray possibly to PS and I doubt there will be a line of poachers.....

I seem to remember Mac with some drive saving clutch grabs and he was money on the jet sweeps.

Gotta keep competition open, but I too like to see what guys bring when the bullets really start to fly and have not seen anything from Ray Ray yet - does not mean that he has not worked his way back into the discussion.

It was said earlier in the thread that this likely is because the D line can’t just pin their ears back and kill the QB so they end up

getting more batted balls because of it. I’m not sweating it

Not really.

They were in red zone passing-only drills and it was shells only (shoulder pads, and helmets). The defensive line knew it was pass and neither line could go all out and get into blocks so they basically stood largely uncontested in a line across from Allen like it was some kind of free kick in soccer, followed his eyes and batted balls.

No one on the line is less than 6'3" and Johnson is 6'7" so not like a real game where it could be run or pass, and you have an offensive linemen into your body driving you. In that situation I am surprised he got as many by them as he did.

There are things to get nervous about - that ain't one of them:)

Re: the 5 TD in red zone discussion - I will say that I don't think anyone who was there today came away thinking Josh or the offense did well in that portion of practice (or even overall), regardless of there being 5 TDs in that portion of practice.  Some pretty brutal plays and throws - no real rhythm or consistency.  Definitely think it's fair to say Josh and the offense were really not "on" today.

Bottom line though think it can really be attributed primarily to the D playing so well vs Josh/offense being terrible.  The D really is playing at a high level as a unit (at least in the last couple days I saw)  - tough, fast, loose, and confident.   I'm looking forward to seeing the offense go against another team.

Not so sure you were wrong. Despite reports from camp, Beane stated during the offseason that he views the receiving corp as a starting 5 basketball team, which means he wanted guys with various skill sets. Not sure who will end up making the team, but I think it is something they have in mind.

It’s funny, because I was at a great party last week and there was no Pepi.

Are you sure it was a party and not just a social gathering that included alcohol as the primary stimulus of having a good time?

I liked Ray Ray, but I i didn't think he was ready last season. He looked very much like a rookie, nervous and made mental mistakes. But I had a feeling the coaches liked him when they put him out there for punt returns.. until he muffed one or two. It seems WR is one of the harder positions to transition to, I'm pulling for the kid this year.

I didn't think there was a way to keep Nsekhe off the field.  Ford to guard is coming up...I feel it.

I think he is too big for tackle. I think the days of giant tackles are over as they get beat too easily by speed rushers. The big guys need to be inside to push DTs around.
