What can you do. The world full of angry individuals. It's a weird time and place.  I blame social media. Most of these issues would have never gained traction 10 years ago. For some reason people love to be outraged.

Does this mean sell out? Like the educational wasteland that pumped her out?

Not getting your point brother...

Our nug..Canisius College grad...makes over 70 k a year and keeps his mouth shut, works hard and still calls me Sir.Dean's List...Jock.

This young girl exposed herself in a unproductive way ..when she had the chance to become a queen bee.

She basically told her School to ***** off and the system that got her to her level of education is a fail.

She's a wise ass...a troublemaker who is all about the spotlight..

Give me team players, all day,all night.

Peace.

How many do you think there are in San Ysidro.  Numbers please.  I'd like to see what we are up against.  ???

I have no clue what you are getting at? The school could be an academic powerhouse or an academic jungle. That isn't the issue for me. There is a time and place to address problems. This stage was not the right place and time to make those snarky remarks.

Then when is?

Did you see the demographics for San Ysidro.

I respectfully diagree agree with you.  Unless you're living with these crappy teachers... You wouldn't understand.

She was smart enough to power through it.  The guidance counsellor thing, is comical.

Thank God she said this... Was thinking of the others that actually need these people.

Sounds like her natural ability got get her to the level of class valedictorian.  She wasn't doing that speech for her own selfish reasons.

How do you know that? I can’t read her mind. It sounded spiteful to me, and spite would be a selfish reason. But I can’t say for sure. How did you feel about Michael Jordan calling out his HS coach during his HOF induction? I did not find that to be a classy or attractive sight.

I prefer people who are smart, but gracious when appropriate. She didn’t have to go there at that moment. I know she’s a kid. I hope as an adult she knows there are better (and FAR more productive) ways of handling it.

If a teacher or employee is an alcoholic and it is affecting one's job there are ways to address the issue. Parents and students have the right to go to the school authorities to address the problem, and if the response is not satisfactory then take the complaint to higher authorities inside and outside the system.

What was the point of bringing up this issue at the podium for a valedictorian speech?  School is over with for this class. My point in my first post is that there is a time and place for everything. I just think poor judgment was exhibited here.

That is your opinion and entitled to it.  I have seen internal corruption in school systems with positions given because of relatives and in ours superintendent signed from school in California given a Rex Ryan type of contract.  This superintendent slashed raises of employees and forced out employees to make his "saving money" milestones in contract resulting higher raises and then to hit another he made other changes to hit more milestones.  Then he had surgery putting him on disability for remainder of his term. This person is collecting a pension for 5 (partial) years work while he destroyed pensions of many employees.

I am sure the alcoholic teacher issue was addressed to no avail and as representative of student body she felt this was the last chance to bring it to attention and I applaud her.

I am going on a limb here... But know absolutely nothing about San Ysidro... But hazard to guess what it's like.  We are living the educational wasteland here.

Take a look at the community she is coming out of... I guarantee it ain't "coastal elite."

You don't see the disparity in society that's happening?  Between the rich and the poor, or working poor.

Yes... Far more productive for her own self-interest to shut up.  I applaud her for not being a good soldier and just shutting up.

“Thank you for using yourself as an example to teach students about the dangers of alcoholism,” Buhr said. “Being escorted by police out of school was a lasting impression. I hope that future students and staff learn from these examples.”

This is my last comment in here because it's veering off topic and this is devolving into PPP material. I'm all for gun purchase requirements. Problem is the ACLU, if they stay true to their roots will have/or should have a problem with some of the restrictions that would be imposed.  I'm not looking up stats,  but I'd be willing to bet that crimes committed via gun violence are heavily skewed towards stolen guns or those that aren't registered to the original buyer. You think all those guys in Chicago will stop shooting one another if they aren't legally allowed to buy a gun?

I’m not asking for her to “shut up”. It would be better advised to act with class.  There are other forums to actually get something positive accomplished.

Again, what did you think of Michael Jordan, while being recognized for his greatness, stooping to using the stage to put someone else down?

I’ll let her off because she earned the moment, she’s a kid and she may not have had much guidance at home (if the demographic thing you mentioned is accurate). I’m not loving spiteful behavior, though. Be bigger than that.

I hated the administration of our kids private HS. I voiced that and tried to improve things in ways I felt appropriate. It was expensive, and they failed in many ways. But I would not have been pleased if my son had that venue and took that approach.

Michael Jordan was almost 40 years ago.

I take it your son didn't grow up in a struggling community.

I'm not challenging you at all about the level of corruption and incompetence that exists in that school system. Those problems represent ingrained political and school corruption. The best way to challenge those problems is through the legal, political system and sustained media attention.

A) That doesn’t answer the question.

B) What does that have to do with anything? Right is right, and wrong is wrong. To address the lack of guidance and the intoxicated teacher in some fashion might have been OK, if it didn’t come of as spiteful or vengeful. It unfortunately made her look smaller for handling it that way, IMO.

Again, I’m not condemning a kid for (almost) anything they say at that point in their lives. I love Josh Allen, but I didn’t love some tweets as a kid.

That’s life! We all get an opinion!  Have a great weekend!  ?

I don't see it as spiteful and vengeful. I see it as a last plea for help!

Have you ever been to these communities?

You literally took the words right off of my keyboard with the bolded.

Based on the praise she gave to her parents it wouldn't surprise me if they felt the same way.

My guess is that her complaints were legit. Where we disagree is I don't have an issue with using the forum she had.  It was the spiteful tone  I could do without. But she is just a teenager. Nobody's perfect.

It’s not HER plea for help. She’s out of there. Is it a plea for others? It didn’t really come of that way to me. But whatever......

Define “these communities”.  I’ve spent time in many different socioeconomic communities. If it’s an “excuse” that she just didn’t know better, it’s unnecessary. I’m not blaming her, I just don’t love it.

I don’t think we disagree there at all. Sometimes it’s not what you do, but how you do it. She’s a kid and has plenty of time to learn that.

Like the communties here.  Teachers that aren't even part of it.  Drive in and collect pay check and then retreat to their bubble... Only to move on to some better choice.

There is a huge sucking sound. I don't know San Yisdro... Hazarding to guess it may be similar.  Sounds like a educational wasteland.

Check out the housing prices for some of these dumps:

https://www.point2homes.com/US/Neighborhood/CA/San-Ysidro-Demographics.html

It has to be crushing with a a median family income of $49k!

Where is the educational money going?  Probably to teachers that live in other communities.

From Wiki, posted up thread:

"In 2010 the census counted 28,008 people in San Ysidro of which 93% were Hispanic. Of those over 5 years old, 10% spoke only English, 87% spoke Spanish. 60% spoke Spanish and spoke English "well" or "very well."

Yeah... They (teachers) are part of the community all right! /smh (sarcasm).

Shaking my head.  From what happens here, I can pretty much guess what the vibe is there.  Of course I may be wrong.  Never been there.

This topic, is where I take a sharp left-handed turn!

3 minutes ago, Doc said:

The salutatorian from my son's HS graduation the other night gave a horrible speech, during which she blasted the Board of Ed.

So.  POTUS blasts people all the time.
