It’s revenge week at SB Nation’s NFL blogs. Josh Allen can grab some on the biggest stage in November.

Josh Allen is trash.”

The insult from Jacksonville Jaguars cornerback Jalen Ramsey summed up a lot of what was said about the Buffalo Bills quarterback all offseason in 2018. While some scouts lauded his tools and ceiling coming into the 2018 NFL Draft, others railed him for being inaccurate.

Many scouts predicted Allen would be the biggest bust of the NFL’s annual selection meeting. Heck. SB Nation wrote a really long, really analytical article about how Josh Allen would defy every predictive measure and statistic if he was a successful NFL quarterback.

“If Josh Allen succeeds, the Bills will have outsmarted basically all regular humans and the entirety of math itself” - SB Nation on Josh Allen before the 2018 NFL Draft

After his rookie season didn’t bear much fruit, Allen has a chance to solidify himself in his sophomore season and with a game on the NFL’s biggest stage in November. He can changes minds in every dusty corner of the country.

It’s an opportunity for everyone on the team to prove detractors wrong. Especially the defense, who while ranked, don’t get nearly the level of respect they should demand.

While that game will have plenty of ? on it, there are 11 games before that for Josh to do plenty of proving himself. If he and this team all play like we hope they do, he will already have made plenty of noise by then. He can then solidify it all on the national stage. My main hope is we don't get beat up by that Denver defense just 4 days prior.

Nice, he only needs to be good for one week.

His rookie season didn't bear much fruit? He was the best player on the team when he played. He was the entire offense on the worst offense in the league. He showed he can carry bad teams... As a rookie!

There's a stunning lack of clarity to that article.  "SB Nation" didn't write an article, a dude named "Jason Kirk" did.  It's a cute quote, but the article itself correctly notes that there's a huge disconnect between what people employed by the NFL appeared to think about Allen, vs. what "armchair analysts" thought.

The quote above is ridiculous on the face of it.  Data is data.  Math is a way to create and manipulate data.  If Allen succeeds, it will simply mean that the data manipulations used to conclude he couldn't succeed have limitations.

Let me simplify this:  if Josh Allen succeeds, it will mean there is still a place for eyeball evaluation of football talent.  And whether or not he succeeds, it's pretty self-evident that's true, because otherwise players would get drafted in the order that media pundits predict, and player's draft order and round would predict their success in the league.  Instead, we regularly see kids drafted in the late rounds or undrafted outperforming more feted higher-round picks - not all the time, or even frequently, but often enough that true stats mavens - those who use statistics professionally and who have big money and reputations riding on understanding the limitations and correct interpretation of statistics - can tell that a significant number of attributes important to NFL success are not captured correctly by college statistics.

One of those attributes might be called "heart".  And when a kid writes 1,000 letters to college coaches looking for an offer...you gotta say he's got heart.

This is well-stated.  It’s Money Ball.   So much of the resentment from the anti-Allen camp comes from the “football analytics” sites who feel their method of evaluation is superior over the traditional methods.  Both parties are hell bent on providing their philosophy is correct.

Like you said, if it was as simple as reading numbers, there would be no 7th rounders or UFA’s outperforming players drafted in higher rounds.

Either way, I hope we do see progression from Mr. Allen

I actually agree the thanksgiving game is HUGE for him specifically or his “brand” if you will. Across the country nobody knows much but his “stats” since everyone just looks at a quick google sheet. Outside of buffalo very few people actually seen him play and he’s considered the 4th best rookie quarterback last year. And there’s more bust talk than potential franchise quarterback talk. I think a lot of people’s minds would change if they actually seen what he’s capable of. I mean our jury is still out if he’s “the guy” but we’ve seen the flashes of elite talent most people have no clue of

So he can be horrible all season but on Thanksgiving we can fool everyone by him playing well?

It’s got nothing to do with us. I specifically said for him and his brand. If he sucks all year and has one amazing elite game on thanksgiving he’ll gain a lot more fans nationally. If we’re a middle of the pack team all season and he has a bad game on thanksgiving he’ll continue to be a nobody/bust across the country because people will never really see him play

What about Edmunds vs. Vander Esch?

Don't care about a bunch of people that don't follow that Bills and Allen doesn't either. It won't change ***** about them, and an opinion of someone who will only watch 1 game of a player will NEVER matter.

Every player cares. That’s how you get the advertisements and endorsements. You either need an MVP type season, a super elite team/record, or some standout coming out party national TV games, Allen wants to win first no doubt, but every player in the league is concerned in marketing their brand and increasing their money
