Tre'Davious White named third-best corner in NFL

Recommended Posts

...and Ramsey at 9th best - oh snap. That has got to sting for a guy with that much ego.

Honestly, I don't really hate on the kid. I don't mind a player that uses trash talk as part of their game to try to get in another player's head and also knows he is going to put himself under the microscope for every play he gives up. Ramsey does that with most all the QBs and pretty much every receiver he faces. It is very deliberate.

Having players that trash talk Buffalo, our team, or players gives fans someone to root against and just makes it all the more enjoyable when we thump their team.

Their CB stable is impressive.  Poyer and Hyde are a solid safety tandem and they could do a lot worse, but they can also do better.  Hopefully some of the younger guys start to make some noise there.

The DB group is special. I made a post about him after week 2 but watch out for Taron Johnson in the slot. Kid jumps off the screen , is extremely physical and very good coverage. He just plays with a ferocious streak and even shined with a bum shoulder. Going to be special

I really like how our depth looks at CB.

Who will start opposite White? Levi Wallace or Kevin Johnson? Where do you put E.J. Gaines? Then there's Taron Johnson, who is definitely a nickel back, but now he will be fully healthy. Let's not forget about Ryan Lewis either.

Safety could be more of a concern. If either Hyde or Poyer get injured(God forbid), who fills in. This is why I think that the addition of Maurice Alexander is one of our better signings this off-season, that no one is talking about. I know they list him as a LB/S, but I see him as playing mostly in the secondary. Does Rafael Bush stay? Does Siran Neal or Dean Marlowe step up? How much playing time will Jaquan Johnson get?

Training camp and preseason will be a lot of fun to watch the competition in this secondary.

Anybody thinking the Bills don't resign White after his rookie deal are out of their minds.  McDermott loves Tre.  This is a whole new regime boys, can't let things that happened in the past influence the future.

These guys passed on josh Norman in Carolina- but wasn’t their final decision and not the same player. I think they keep tre but they’ve let a top cb walk recently.

likewise let Gilmore walk.

I think Johnson will be an instant special teams stud and serviceable backup. But he absolutely has a shot to be a starter down the line. Vosean Joseph will be a starter in 2020. Don't know anything about D. Johnson.

And we absolutely need these types of things to happen....we are going to have to pay a significant portion of our cap space to a QB very very soon....drafting and playing effective starters is going to have to happen.

Hmmm. McD already let the best corner in the league walk. Terrible decision. Could have signed long term or franchised. Say what you will but it is a black mark on his talent evaluation.  That said he drafted White and added Poyer and Hyde so deserves high marks for those moves.

Series of dumb moves by Whaley too. He gave more money than TT was worth and should have forced him to earn it. Gilmore should have been extended after his fourth year and they could have paid far less than the Patriots paid him.

A past life at this point, and ad poster said in a couple years if they are still here Beane will be tested on his draft well and keep mantra.

No, he let Gilmore walk and got a better and cheaper replacement.

McD took one look at Gilmore’s chickenschit display of self preservation to avoid injury during his contract year and pointing a finger at teammates as the receiver who ran by him waltzed into the endzone and immediately knew Gilmore wasn’t his type of player.

And good on him for that.

Great cornerback, perhaps best in the game currently. And I didn’t shed a tear when he left.

Being allowed to play by Cheater rules has obviously helped him a lot.

look him up. (i don't know how to post links yet). he's another jerry hughes....nothing but a pass rush specialist/talent.  seems to have a lot of awards and going off the top of my memory ,  i think he led( possibly the nation) in sacks. it's just that he wasn't in a major program. heard him on onebillslive and he sounds like he's determined to muscle up(now at 255) and become a sack artist. shaq won't be here next year.

Jerry Hughes was a 1st round talent. I think there is a difference. I hope Johnson shows something because we need help there.

You do realise that most of those plays in Rex's last year where Gilmore was pointing at the safeties was because the safeties were actually terrible. Rex's last year our safety play was the worst in the NFL.

One of the things McDermott did immediately was transform that area of the team. Went from 32nd to top 5 almost immediately.

While this is true, to me, it doesn't change the issue of him basically giving up on a lot of plays and some plays looked to me as if he just refused to try and tackle anyone. Was almost like he was just done and didn't want to play in quite a few instances that I saw.

To me, he did look like a guy who had quit at times. You don’t always win, but you never quit.

But there’s no doubt he started trying again in NE.

I don’t care how bad those safeties were or how bad Rex was and they were as sorry a group as ever assembled.

Players with football character don’t point fingers at their teammates while the opposing receiver that ran by you a moment earlier IS STILL WALTZING INTO THE ENDZONE.

And Rex and the safeties had nothing to do with his decision to turtle instead of making a hit in the interest of self preservation because you’re in a contract year and don’t want to get hurt. He had checked out before the first kickoff of the year. Good riddance.

Helluva good CB, though. And glad as hell he’s gone nonetheless.

I simply don't agree. Was it Gilmore's best year as a Bill? No. But that was mainly on Rex and inept teammates not on him. @thebandit27 has produced the numbers on Gilmore that season plenty of times. They tell the real story.

I am not even arguing the Bills should have kept him. I think at a point when you are about to start a rebuild and go to more of a zone based scheme paying top dollar to a guy who does his best work in man wasn't necessarily the way to go - but that comes back to the question should they have rebuilt or reloaded which is a different debate.

While being very happy to see Tre get some love, I can't help but think 3rd is to low. I have never seen a DB shut down Gronk the way Tre did, Gronk was so embarrassed he tried to injure Tre. I see him as nearly the best DB, one that takes the top WRs out of the game. But I'm a homer.

Bandit and I have agreed on Gilmore since his rookie season when, while often getting roasted by many here, we took the time to point out what he was doing and how, halfway through that season, when he started "shadowing" top receivers and played more man to man, he was a force and already one of the best CBs in the league. So you don't have to sell me on Gilmore's talent. It's obvious.

Numbers tell how great he is as a player. And there's no denying that.

His actions, on the other hand,  told how lousy he was as a teammate that season. It was glaring and I suspect it didn't escape McD's scrutiny when he locked himself in the room and poured over game tapes when he arrived.

While Rex certainly deserves much of the blame for the structures of the defense and how he used personnel within those structures, things like attitude, morale, effort, accountability, playing for your teammates etc., are STRICTLY a personal decision; you know, indicators of "football character" and Gilmore failed miserably in that department in his last season here.

Tre’Davious White named third-best corner in NFL

In just two NFL seasons, Tre’Davious White has already established himself as one of the NFL’s best. The USA TODAY NFL Wire marked White as the third-best outside cornerback in the NFL. Here’s what Doug Farrar wrote about the LSU product.

Most young cornerbacks find themselves in a vicious learning curve when transitioning from college to the NFL—receivers are better and smarter, route concepts are far more complex, and coverages are more variable. White has proven the exception to the rule. He allowed a 48.1% catch rate and an opponent passer rating of 64.9 in his rookie season of 2017, and given equivalent opportunities in 2018, White showed that he doesn’t know what a sophomore slump looks like—he allowed 30 catches on 52 targets for just 357 yards, two touchdowns, two interceptions, and an opponent passer rating of 75.6.

That is why he is a keeper. Please start retaining our DB's after their rookie training contract! How many good players have left!

I don't agree. He was failed by inept coaching and dreadful safety play from teammates.

So, because he had a bad coach and less talented teammates, it was ok for him to not give his best effort to protect himself from injury in his contract year as well as point fingers at teammates while a play was still occurring? That is disrespecting the game as well as the fans, too. And as a fan, I'm surprised you're ok with that.

I'll reiterate and then close my end of this particular discussion: Attitude and effort are ALWAYS a personal choice. Always. There is no blaming the lack thereof on others.

I don't think he did fail to give his best. You do. I don't. I think it looked like he was because things that were not on him were perceived to be.

I had little problem with his coverage effort and I can appreciate not getting safety help when it was supposed to be there. Some fans can't distinguish certain responsibilities in certain coverage schemes and so they often blame the last defender closest to the receiver, but I'm not one of them. The play where he was pointing fingers while the receiver that ran past him and was still running towards the endzone was clearly not his fault. So, while I understand his frustration, how he chose to display it was classless.

The lack of effort I'm talking about is shying away from contact and giving up easy yards as a result. He was all about avoiding injury in his contract year. Especially earlier in the season. That contributed to some friction in the room, too, as I understand it.

Anyway, as a new coach coming in and reviewing the tape, I can understand why McDermott formed the opinions he did. If my sole impression of Gilmore was his '16 game tape, I'd have serious questions, too. When a player that good doesn't always show full effort, it's glaring.
