That's a lot more playing time than Jimmy Garoppolo, and look at the contract he got.

Still, it is a curious move by the Eagles. I understand you want to lock up your franchise, but they could have waited one more year.

Not sure what you are hearing on the west coast, but I’ve heard rumblings that the Rams may choose not to pay Goff because McVay believes it’s his system and not the player that makes the offense. Interesting to consider.

Ooh! I like that idea. That might be the kind of thing that brings the QB market into check.

would seem to me that the players’ union would want to restrict any max contract to no more than  .... say ....11% of cap, so that the rest would be spread out among the rest of the team.

not sure if I’m a closet communist or just jealous of somebody getting 30 mill for playing a game.

i just think gms are dumb who give all the money to one player when all 22 matter unlike NBA.

Holy friggin crap!!!

Already?!?!

Seriously???

33 games. Barely 2 full seasons total in games.

Huge gamble by the Eagles essentially on those 11 games in his 2nd season before his injury.

Rookie year he caught everyone by surprise with his first 4 games and was awful for his last 12. Last year he was just "meh" as far as NFL starting QBs go. The Eagles are massively gambling on 2 things:

1) His 2nd season is more the norm than anomaly.

2) He can stay healthy.

The Eagles will regret this contract.  He's a slightly above average quarterback.  He injures often and he only throws the ball to Zach Ertz.  That's why Ertz has like 500 catches per year with Wentz around.   I guess they are paying for potential.

Slightly above average? He was well on his way to an MVP in his SECOND season as an NFL QB. This guy has everything and has shown it(when healthy). I believe that this move was premature, but people vastly underrate just how good a fully healthy Carson Wentz is.

I'm so confused about this contract. Why are they doing this now?

Because if he stays healthy this season and he has a good year, the market price for him after his rookie contract expires will be around $200M. It's a smart move on the Eagles part. Extend him now for much less rather than wait and let guys like Dak reset the market. If Josh looks great this year we should do the exact thing.

The qb scale goes up every year at a high rate. So it is better to do it sooner rather than later. Kirk Cousins broke the bank vault by playing on one year deals that were escalating at a high rate each year. So if you are confident in your franchise qb then you might as well secure him as soon as you can.

true enough.

so we lock up Josh during the post season run ?

The Eagles looked stupid with Kelly. then they looked smart going to the Big Game.

now they look a bit stupid again.

i would have kept Foles and built a team around him. Trade Wentz for a bazillion dollars and lotsa draft picks etc.
sure i am in the minority

Wow!

That is most interesting. Is McVay looking ahead to next year's QB class?

Not sure, but the rumor is that he believes he can recreate his offense without having to break the bank on the QB, allowing them to still surround the QB with tons of players.

It makes sense that the next QB contract can’t be an automatic jump up from the last QB contract.....especially if the QB isn’t the next great Franchise QB. Simply being “next” doesn’t make you worth more. That requires being “better”. Better to start over than over-pay and cripple your team and cap situation.

These QB contracts are out of control!

I believe he's correct. Goff is Terrell Davis/Mike Anderson/Olandis Gary IMO.

WOOF. Not sure i’d throw that type of money at this guy now. Yes, best case: he’s a physical monster-amalgam of dan marino and peyton manning. Worst case he’s a rickety, slightly more accurate Flacco who misses on average 5 games a season. Noooooo thanks have fun Philly

Just to show you the ridiculousness of these contracts I found a fun article.  We've gone from a quarterback making 1.5 million a year as a record in '86 to the new record of Russell Wilson making 35 million a year with Wentz not far behind.  With inflation Kelly's annual salary would be about 3.5 million per year today.

Bills Make Kelly NFL's Highest-Paid Player

Jim Kelly, record-setting passer in the United States Football League, became the highest-paid player in the National Football League Monday.

The Buffalo Bills signed Kelly to a five-year contract that, according to Kelly's agents, is worth between $7.5 million and $8 million. The salary, about $1.5 million a year, is at least $200,000 more than quarterback Joe Montana's annual pay with the San Francisco 49ers.

The Bills are hoping to receive instant credibility with fans after winning just 4 of their last 32 games and selling fewer than 20,000 season tickets for the second straight season.

Concurrent with Kelly's signing, the Bills announced that they had waived Art Schlichter, former Ohio State and Indianapolis Colts' quarterback.

Kelly, who worked with a run-and-shoot offense in the USFL, said he has been practicing the dropback style of passing the Bills use and hopes to be ready to play in about two weeks.

"I'm an athlete, I'm a competitor; whatever the situation is, I'm going to give 100%," Kelly said. "I can't promise you a Super Bowl because you're only as good as the people they put around you. If I get some help, I definitely think we can take this team to a championship."

Kelly dismissed his past statements about whether he wanted to play in Buffalo or elsewhere, saying, "Right now I'm playing for the Buffalo Bills."

Said Buffalo Coach Hank Bullough: "Kelly's our future, because he's given us something to build on. We have that one big block to build on.

"He's going to be a great impact player, as much an impact as any player can be. But there's never been the player who's turned everything around in the National Football League."

Ralph Wilson, the Bills' owner, challenged Kelly to have a career with Buffalo that would merit his placement on the Bills' "Wall of Fame," which includes O.J. Simpson, Rep. Jack F. Kemp and long-time team executive Patrick J. McGroder Jr.

At the Buffalo airport, after a flight from Houston, Kelly stepped off a private plane with Wilson. He posed with a football and a No. 12 jersey before heading downtown in a police-escorted limousine for a news conference.

At the podium, where he was joined by his parents, Kelly was flanked by team and city officials before being introduced by Wilson.

The Bills have been 2-14 in each of the last two seasons, and their season ticket sales are the lowest in the league. Last season, Buffalo sold just 14,500 season tickets.

"Mr. Wilson alluded to the fact that he's sometimes called cheap and he's sometimes castigated for not doing what he can to build a championship team," General Manager Bill Polian said. "The fact that Jim is sitting here to my left is an enduring monument to Ralph Wilson's commitment to building a winner for the city of Buffalo."

After news of the signing was made public Monday, lines formed at the box office at 80,290-seat Rich Stadium in suburban Orchard Park. Sales for the Sept. 7 regular-season opener against the New York Jets had reached the 30,000 mark by the end of the day, a team spokesman said.

The USFL suspended play two weeks ago after being awarded just $3 in damages in its antitrust suit against the NFL. The New Jersey Generals, who Kelly had joined in a merger with his team, the Houston Gamblers, gave him permission to negotiate elsewhere.

Last Tuesday, the Bills announced they would begin negotiations with Kelly, whose rights they held after drafting him out of the University of Miami as their second choice in the first round of the 1983 NFL draft.

The pick with which Kelly was chosen was obtained when the Bills traded their rights to Ohio State linebacker Tom Cousineau to the Cleveland Browns in April 1982, a deal that was much-criticized in Buffalo.

...pretty amazing Jimbo's CAREER earnings ($28.7 mil) are less than what the current crop makes ANNUALLY....

So does this have potential to turn the tide on these outrageous contracts that QB's get?

What if the Rams continue to win with Goff, and they choose to keep him after his rookie contract is up? Would they actually give him a much lower contract than what other QB's are getting?

If it indeed is true, I could see McVay being the pioneer on turning the tide on the “giant contract QB, then build rest of team with what’s left” philosophy simply because he’s viewed as a genius  and teams want to copy what he does. Only issue is not every coach can succeed on offense on scheme only.

....."fiscal insanity" is here to stay...if all goes according to plan, Josh may be the first $40 mil/yr QB.....remember when SD let Brees hit the open market and OBD choked at paying his $10 mil/yr number?......pretty sure Pegula pays the "Rockpile Beerman" $8.5 mil now...just sayin'...........

Brady is getting paid under the table and the Patriots are circumventing the salary cap. I'm 100% sure this is happing and it will be the cherry on top of their decade of cheating when it comes out.

Maybe Josh should start learning the guitar, buy a cowboy hat and boots and then PS&E can sign him to an exclusive recording contract.  Should help with the salary cap down the road.  He can't be any worse at music than he was at drawing the Bills' logo.

I don't think so personally. Very unique situation. McVay is not popular around these parts, but he's an offensive mastermind. He inherited Goff. He didn't choose him. Franchise QB's will continue to get paid BIG and I don't see an end in sight to that. Some team would probably pay Goff BIGTIME money(and be disappointed) if this were to occur. Kind of like Cousins still got paid huge money.

And Garoppolo.

Which makes me wonder if McVay is looking forward to a new QB in next year's draft or does he let Goff play out his rookie contract.
