BILLS Dead-Cap $ in '19 will AffectTrades & Vet Cuts

I look at DEAD CAP as the major factor in a team’s future.  The cash the team has to give up if they trade or cut a player.  Keep the DEAD CAP under control and re-tooling a team on a regular basis isn’t a crisis.  Examples of our GM's maneuvers for this season are:

1     ---  Getting Shady, with his $9 mil Cap Hit, to a very reasonable $2.6 mil DEAD CAP number. NO new 2 year contract offered!  Last year the DEAD CAP was $11.5 mil and there was no way we could trade him.  Now, at age 31, he could easily be dealt for a medium round pick if the Bills feel he’s on the down side of his great career.  LeSean is an Unrestricted Free Agent after this season!!

---     2   --- Not signing Shaq Lawson for a 5th year and with a DEAD CAP of $3.2 mil he would cost the Bills just $1.8 mil in a trade or by releasing him outright.  I can’t image a #1 pick isn’t worth a 6th or 7th pick to someone???  Shaq is an Unrestricted Free Agent in 2020.

3    ---     Russell Bodine at Center was a mistake!  His DEAD CAP is down to $500,000.  Why keep him around?  The original contract was great so we could let him walk!

4   ---     IF we keep Patrick DiMarco at FB he will earn $2.2 mil this year. His DEAD CAP was $3.4 mil in 2017 but is now a reasonable $1 mil. Can a young player with more skills do the same job??

 Nice job Mr. Beane!

Because he isn't that good and he can walk next year for zero compensation - that's why!

he is fine, a solid rotational piece at worst , giving him a away for a 6th round pick is silly.

The why haven't they re-signed him to make sure he doesn't walk away?  After 4 years of watching him play they must have a pretty good feel for what he's all about - right?

because they don;t have too.  If he plays well this year they can resign him or they can let him walk and maybe get a comp pick .    There is no reason to get rid of him now

Maybe because he hasn't played 4 years?

They have an option they can pick up on him for a 5th year, there is no pressure to extend him at this current stage...so theres that too.

Shaq has come along slowly but has shown signs of improvement. I'm guessing GM's don't like to walk away from 1st round draft picks unless theyre convinced he's not worth the roster spot. They don't need to resign him right now, they don't need to dump him off the team either. They can wait & see if he is worth holding on to or they could trade him down the road. Just seems like a good position to be in  & what you'd want really.

Wow - he's played in 35 games and has a total of 42 solo tackles.  Every time he makes a play the fans think "maybe he is coming along" !!  He runs stiff in his hips and will never be a big time edge rusher.

WHAT are you talking about??  They need to sign him by May 3rd of this year for the 5th year option to take hold!!!   He'll get a big salary increase also!!

This team is trying to build depth at every position.  This has to be a big jump year.  We have done a great job imo of filling holes and positioning ourselves with much draft flexibility.  I don't think they would be looking to move Lawson, a productive player and lose that depth even if he isn't a starter this year.

Or maybe you dont really know much about Shaq and just read stat sheets?   Don't know what to tell you.

I mean you already were wrong in saying "4 years" when he has been in the NFL for 3 years.  He barely played as a rookie thanks to surgery on top of that.

So while you want to blur his stats to make him look worse...the reality is that as a backup over 25 games playing his way into a role with the new regime the last 2 seasons, he has 8 sacks, 3 FF, 35 solo tackles and 28 more assisted tackles.

Sorry, just don't think you know much about Shaq Lawson in this case.

I know enough that if the Bills do sign his 5th year option by May 3rd he'll get around $11mil in 2020 (avg salary for top 25 DE's).  That's top $ for an established edge rusher which he hasn't proven to be!!!   We'll just to see what the BILLS THINK - not you or me!   IF the Bills draft an edge rusher - - -

Just want to point out that 5th-year options are only guaranteed for injury (which is certainly a risk).

As long as a player is healthy they can be cut without any financial penalty to the team (Well, aside from the fact that they will get nothing in return). The 5th-year money doesn't become guaranteed until the league year begins.

I think as of Thursday night it won't matter - he'll be headed to the 49er's!!
