Slavery Reparations V.2 - A Worthy Discussion

Not at all. Slavery depressed wages so if anything they were harmed by slavery.

The reparations crowd would argue that "debt" was paid in full via white privilege during the 20th Century.  Further, these loons believe that every town had a secret society that existed for the promotion of whites even if they did not have a mission to oppress minorities.  But it all boils down to who they expect will actually be writing the checks which is why they are not even interested in Great Britain's role as the mother nation watching slavery take root here centuries ago.

Spain, actually.  They introduced slavery to the New World.  Although the Royal Navy was originally built on the slave trade.

What if you have an ancestor who was an abolitionist who fought and died for the Union in the Civil War?

His descendants were more than payed in full via white privilege during the 20th Century.

It was all about cheap cotton.

Funny thing is that cotton got dirt cheap once mechanization took full root in the cotton belt.  Had slavery and the advent of the farm tractor truly intersected in time the slave owners would have faced the conundrum of what to do with all the excess labor.

Yeah, this isn't about just "wages" in the 1800s.

That's been the "catch all" argument for those whose ancestors did not participate in slavery and were white.

Correct.

We should file for reparations from both the descendants of freed slaves and of Confederate soldiers that survived the War

Mine were Yankees going back to 1630, so pre-dated any slaves.  But I guess I'm on the hook big time when the SJWs get around to reparations for American Indians.

You're just a piker. Mine was the first governor of New Amsterdam who purchased Manhattan for $24 of trinkets from the wrong Indians. Anyway, I claim 1624 and I won't pay a guilder in reparations.

My family are all Italian immigrants. We were not here during slavery. Why would I pay for something done over 100 years ago, when none of my ancestors were involved? Give me a break! The Democratic Party has become a PT Barnum circus. If you watch The Greatest Showman movie you’ll know all that’s level is to recruit the Dog Boy and Bearded Lady.

Ask Tibs. His pre-Nazi ancestors came to Virginia in the 1600s and in all likelihood owned slaves.

Slavery was legal in all the colonies. Massachusetts was the first to ban the practice... in 1780, PA, New Hampshire followed suit. New York - 1799-1824. Ohio - 1802. New Jersey 1804. Connecticut and RI did it in 1784.
