Jets getting better is ultimately good for the Bills

Recommended Posts

I was bummed to see Bell sign with the Jets last night, but after thinking about it a little bit, I think on the whole a competitive Jets team is good for us.  This has been the Patriot's division for 17 years and a large part of their success has been playing the Bills, Jets, and Dolphins twice a season, every season.  Playing in this milquetoast division filled with three dysfunctional franchises has been one of the main factors in their dynasty.

The last season the Patriots had less than double digit regular season wins was in 2002.  Since then they have only had two seasons with less than 11 wins.  Not only do they waltz into the playoffs every year, but with their fat regular season record from dominating the AFC East, they usually have home field advantage too.

For the Bills to finally be contenders, the Patriots can no longer dominate the division.  The Patriots need to start losing division games and winning the AFC East needs to become competitive again, not just a foregone conclusion.  That's why it's good for the Jets to get better too, not just the Bills.  Instead of the Patriots going 6-0 in division games, or having that one fluke loss and going 5-1 in the division, the Patriots need to start going 3-3 in the division playing tough Bills and Jets squads and suddenly the division is up for grabs again.  Being able to have playoff games in Orchard Park would be huge.  For way too long the road to the playoffs has gone through Foxborough

The Patriots dynasty can't end soon enough and a competitive Jets team is an important part of that.  We need to have the AFC East become a normal football division again, with multiple competitive teams and the title up for grabs at every season opener, not this dysfunctional division of the Patriots and the Three Dwarves.  It goes without saying that the Bills need to finally take that next step and become competitive, but the Jets need to become competitive too.

In the big picture, I think the Jets getting better is more of a plus than a minus for our division and the Bills.

Do you think the Jets got better than Buffalo?

It's just too soon to know.  I think it is fair to say both teams have gotten more competitive.

Imo yours was a well thought analysis.

Improved Jets and Bills teams along with Brady and Gronk getting old simply has to impact the Patriots, or at least one would think.

My reason's are a bit more selfish.  I'd just like to see the 2 games a year the Bills/Jets play to be highly competitive and meaningful to watch.  And the outcome of their late season games more than an exercise in calculating the odds for a better draft spot.  If it makes the Patriots season a little harder and eventually eliminates their automatic playoff berth and division title all the better.

NE wins as much vs the rest of the league as they do in the AFC East..... watch BB stack the line and take Bell out of the game....Darnold is still not ready to beat a team by himself....I'm willing to bet my house that NE does better than 3-3 in the division....

I don’t follow the logic here. If Josh Allen ends up being a good QB, and the Bills stop being a doormat for NE, why would we want the Jets to be good? How does the Jets being good benefit the Bills? Either the Bills right the ship after two decades of suck our we continue on the cruise.

IMO, a competitive division from top to bottom, year in and year out, might make it more difficult to regularly win the division or make the playoffs; however, it makes the teams better and prepares them better for a playoff run if they do get in.

Just two different philosophies and like the Allen/Darnold picks, I'd say both fanbases are relatively happy so far.  Both even got embarrassed - us with AB, and them with Barr.

We've signed 8 guys to manageable contracts, and all are upgrades, or guys looking for their shot to become that upgrade, specifically on the OL.  Where the Jets signed a Le'Veon Bell and Osemele to help Darnold.  Beane went out and signed 4 new OL, including one of the top Centers in the game, a clear objective was to fortify the OL.

I'd say our WR groups are similar now, ours may be a little better with the new additions.   Anderson/Enunwa/Crowder vs Foster/Beasley/Brown/Zay

Both teams are meh at TE right now.  Depending on what Shady has left in the tank, both teams have dynamic RB's.  I feel a lot better about our OL situation right now vs theirs.

Where we can eclipse them, clearly, on paper is if we get an edge rusher and then go DT at 9.  We'd be looking at a potentially elite side of the ball.   The Jets defense should be good, especially if they get Quinnen Williams or Josh Allen, with the addition of Moseley, but I wouldn't put them on par with ours should we make those moves.

Yeah, it’s a catch 22. I’d prefer the other three teams stink and the Bills make the dance year after year and use our division opponents like a practice squad.

But....I’d also just like to die with at least another home playoff game. God, I hope Allen is the guy.
