Cos they are right up against the cap and were gonna release him for nothing. Out of conference and off the books it makes sense.

I know, but I hate the Pats - everyone hates them...

Sorry just needed to vent and get that out

An #Eagles trade of DE Michael Bennett to the Patriots is going down as of this writing, NFL sources said. Draft picks still be ironed out.

And Michael Bennett rejects trade unless Pats name his brother Martellus the All-Time greatest Pats TE and put on their Ring of Honor.  Pats now moving on.

He turns 34 during the season and wants a pay raise.  Hopefully NE gives it to him and then he hits the wall for his career.  Not saying he will.  He was productive last year.  He might though.

Yeah, that'll teach 'em...

And then the Pats will trade him to a team like Oakland for a 1st rounder

And miss on said first round pick.

I just don't understand why teams trade with them....

Seriously. Belichick makes great trades. I fully expect the trade to be one sided.

EDIT: Yep, pair of future late round picks in 2020. So dumb.

Sneaky solid deal.  Replaced Flowers, didn't give up much in the form of draft compensation.  They'll probably recoup it all to trade down half a round.

He was a cut candidate anyway with the eagles pushed right against the cap.  Moving him and letting jernigan and foles walk gives the eagles some ability to address WR2/3 (if they move on from agholor, or decide to bring back tate), RB1, and their secondary.  Oline is getting a bit up there in age too.

Thats the thing.  Gives up a 5th.  Gets Flowers replacement and a 7th.  Come next year watch will get higher than that 5th via Flowers Compensatory Pick compensation

5th - 7th rounders have virtually the same amount of success in the NFL (Random luck). So even dropping down 2 rounds isn't a big deal. Where the Pats exploit the market is that the acquisition doesn't count towards their comp pick calculation but it will help it next year

so basically by moving down 2 rounds (which doesn't even matter) they get Bennett for a year and up their chances of getting a comp pick next year, which will likely be higher than a 5 (just b/c Bennett is a good player)

Yep - probably net the 3rd round comp pick for flowers.  Not to mention guys like trent brown, malcolm brown and shelton should net comp pick compensation.  Can extend Bennett if they need cap room.  Can go after cut players like malik jackson and eric weddle, who have no impact on the comp pick formula.  Oh and they have 6 of the first 101 picks in THIS draft ? - so they can add... rotational defensive linemen, secondary depth, offensive line depth, coverage/tweener OLB, WRs, or TEs
