D'haquille aka Duke Williams, Bills' newest WR better than any draft prospect

Good. We have an owner willing to spend $2 million for a longshot try out player. Who cares?

The point is it was left out of his summary and I question whether it was intentional because it was counter to his argument that they did not have resources for WRs.

It was actually 3 mil guaranteed I think for what turned out to be a one week tryout, but who's counting? Right?

  • 3 weeks later...

Who is the Eskimos' liquored up kicker talking about?

Quote

For the Edmonton Eskimos, it was as much about getting their roster down to the quantity required ahead of this week's season-opener, as the quality.

While last year's squad was to be commended for leading the Canadian Football League in passing, there was also a real and definite problem that also existed, which led to the Eskimos missing the playoffs for the first time in five years The issue was enough to negate the positive effects of having the league's top passing-yards leader in Mike Reilly, now with the B.C. Lions, and receiving-yards leader in Duke Williams, now with the National Football League's Buffalo Bills, as well as C.J. Gable becoming Edmonton's first 1,000-yard rusher in seven seasons.

And it all had to do with cohesiveness in the locker-room, according to one veteran member of the team.

"Yeah, I think the cancer that was in the locker-room is gone," said Eskimos kicker Sean Whyte, who is entering his 13th CFL season after joining the Eskimos mid-way through 2015.

You forgot Coleman who Bills got for a 7th round pick assuming contract and then cut.

Perhaps the purpose of that signing was an episode of "Scared Straight" for Robert Foster.

From the article, Hervey was the Eskimos former GM and current BC GM. Stafford is the current Eskimos WR.

Question is how can a GM be a lockerroom cancer? Strange situation all around.

Easy for the big boss to cause issues. Even unintentionally if you talk about a coach or player it can quickly cause a divide if you aren’t smart/measured in comments

In addition A Boldin...signed then retired rather than play.

The argument that gambles dont really matter or this guy was cheap so who cares doesnt hold water. It is all part of the roster building process. The team expects a contribution from that player so either does not sign another player or spends the saved money elsewhere etc. The plan did not work regardless of the money associated. That is a failed attempt to fill the position with the guys they expected could do it.

It does matter because at the time the Bills were cap hurting.  The Bills needed to absorb cap hit.

And when your cap hurting you need to make even better decisions not worse. Such as wasting a few million on a WR you cut a week later, as just one example.

Agree which is why I cited Coleman example but I blame WR coach in this case.

That didn't matter at all since 2018 was about getting rid of the dead cap... So a few million was really nothing. Also you never know if they will make it so take the chance for cheap money in a year you are creating all of this dead cap.

So it was a very good choice to begin with just the player didn't do his part.

Lets also shun the patriots for also trying to do the same with the player

This is falso

Last year was never about biulding a team that would win that year

You can take chances on high ceiling low risk players/low money players

I have no problem with the swing

i get your point. but that also waste Coaching time and investing as a team build.
at that point in time i would have rather they found someone who could and would participate. and perhaps contribute immediately and longer term.
Like the guy with the migraines. High ceiling low floor

: )

Calculated risk.

They didn’t have cap to get a known good quantity so took a chance.

Its just good business
