Eagles to Tag Foles

I think Philly still feels their window is open for another Super Bowl run.  Wentz can't stay healthy and Foles has been the best backup in the league at the most important position on the field.  It goes without saying that Philly doesn't win the Super Bowl two years ago or even make the playoffs this season without Foles under center.  I think it's a smart move to hold onto him one more year as insurance if Wentz can't stay healthy.

This can only be good news for the Bills as it makes it more likely that Foles if off the free agent QB market.  One less free agent QB makes the QBs in the draft more valuable and it would be great to see more teams fighting to jump ahead of us or trade with us to grab their QB.  Either way the Bills win, the more QBs selected ahead of us the more likely a non-QB prospect McBeane covets will drop to us at 9, or we can trade back and pick up some extra picks and still find a quality player in the middle of the 1st round.

I don’t see this as a tag and trade.  I don’t believe Wentz has won the team, and they are also safeguarding from poor play.

Wentz may may have a better stat line, but the team played much better under Foles, believe that’s why they will keep him.  Problem is, what does keeping Foles do to Wentz?  Always looking over his shoulder.

I agree with this. I think the Eagles are in their ‘Oh Crap’ moment here. They were probably hoping Foles wouldn’t see the field this past year...but now their young ‘franchise’ QB can’t stay healthy and they’re scared to death to be left with Wentz and no backup. I’m not convinced that Foles is going anywhere in 2019.

I think this would be good news.  Teams like Miami that are considering ditching Tanny are going to have to pay big to get their next QB.  Teams who have QBs are not letting good ones go for no compensation.  The market is making teams pay to get a QB.  Since we are no longer in the market, and Miami is, I like it.  Miami could also do something similar to ensure that they get some kind of compensation.  After Buffalo spending so much for their QB, I think it's only fair that others should have to do the same. Not just Miami, too.  Teams like the Giants and even the Bengals could be considering other options.  Let them.  Teams that have clear needs like Jacksonville, Denver, Miami are in a tough spot because everyone knows it and the market is going to make them pay. Any team that wants Foles will pay dearly and the Eagles are right to not just let him go for nothing.

Foles value is still high and eagles could probably get a second if tyrod is worth a third.  What teams have extra seconds?

I agree that Foles is worth a second (at least), but not for this reason. Just because the Browns gave us a third for Tyrod doesn't mean he's worth a third. Beane swindled them on that deal.

Fair enough, but if they do that, they shouldn't be surprised if Foles works in his ... threatening to not sign (or promising to sign if Philly wants to keep their options open). It had been a love fest between them till now. But all bets are off if this report is on target.

Apparently some team WILL or the Eagles are reasonably sure that a team WILL:

http://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/25908384/philadelphia-eagles-expected-franchise-trade-nick-foles-sources-say

It's a little risky because Philly is already over the cap for the 2019 season by about $7.5 million even after redoing safety Rodney McLeod's deal and including their carryover of about $6 million from last year...if nobody bites or simply waits til Philly has to do something to get under the cap, they could get him for less, although getting anything for him would be better tahn getting nothing, so a 4th round pick is still better than no pick.

From where did you get the $7.5M number?  Spotrac, who is pretty current, has the Eagles at $19M over the cap and franchising Foles would add another $5M or so.  They'll need to clear that room before March 13th and if it's truly $24M, that's a tall order.

yea the browns trading for tyrod seems bad but it seems he was at least a good mentor.  i was a fan of tyrod and you can certainly do worse than him at qb.

Union deals require players to follow union rules. He only "earned" the right to be part of the collective bargaining agreement.

Yeah I get it...

The “rules” say that the Eagles can do this so that’s all that matters right?

Don’t worry that they still would have got a third round comp pick for him anyway..his value must be completely maximised to the Organisation.

After the Sam Bradford trade, where they made out like bandits - Philly appears to be overvaluing its QBs. If they tag him, no team is going to pay him 20 mill AND give up draft compensation - so Phill is going to be stuck in cap hell. IMO, very dangerous move.

That's exactly what I thought when I found out the details. There are at least two QBs who are guaranteed first rounders, maybe three. The Dolphins and Giants can't afford him, and the Jaguars will probably take a QB. I cannot seriously believe Philly would do this... their cap numbers are ATROCIOUS!

This is wrong. Foles is the consummate professional and fully understands the team needs to do what is best for the team.

You're exactly right.  I'm sure Foles and his agent have made it clear what his desires are.  The Eagles have known that this day was coming and should have prioritized their options and strategy.  If they plan to keep him and pay him, they will have other contracts to rework and some expensive veterans to release.  If they plan to let him go, they will work to get the most compensation in return ( with a compensory pick as the last resort ).  Good GM's do long term planning and I'm sure the Eagles have.
