The Inabilty to Draft a CB cost the Bills 4 Super Bowls

The Bills tried and tried to draft a true starting corner back to play across from Nate Odomes during their Super Bowl run.  Nate was their 2nd Round pick in 1987 and the failure to find a strong CB for the other side hurt them for the next 7 years.

Nate had 26 interceptions, made 360 tackles and was voted to 2 Pro-Bowls in his 108 games with Buffalo.  Who can forget the '92 overtime interception vs. the Oilers in overtime?

From then on - - -

'88  Ezekial Gadson  #5 - - CUT

'89  Michael Andrews #5 - - CUT

Chris Hale - #7    43 games with Bills as Punt Returner

'90  James Williams  #1 - - BUST!!  He was always around a receiver but could never make a play!

'91 Henry Jones #1  - - a SS - 10 years with the Bills - - BUT - not CB.  He should have played in our Super Bowl vs. the Redskins when Leonard Smith was out with a career ending injury.  But, Marv was mad at him for coming into camp late due to a contract dispute and the terrible Dwight Drane got the start and was cut 2 weeks later.

'92  Matt Darby #5   Just 55 games with the Bills

Kurt Schulz #7  8 seasons with the Bills at Free Safety - 21 interceptions.  A favorite of Chris Berman!

'93 Thomas Smith  #1  CB  BUST  Couldn't make the big plays.  Just 6 interceptions in 110 games with the Bills.

'94  Jeff Burris  #1 CB    BUST  He played 4 years with the Bills and 6 with the Colts & Bengals.  He was a good tackler - - after the catch!!

OH for a very good Corner-back during those glorious years!!

IIRC Bills drafted CB Derrick Burroughs as 2nd pick in 1985 draft.  He was very good and he and Odomes were a good tandem. Unfortunately he took a shot from Leonard Smith our SS in a game late in 1988.  An xray showed he had acute cervical stenosis and he had to retire.  Too bad, was a stud

I always thought it was the amount of time it took the Bills to figure out they should be running the ball every down against a 2-linemen defense that cost them the first Super Bowl. I'm not convinced they would have won the other three no matter what. Those Redskins and Cowboys teams were incredibly great.

You really do think that one player would have made the Bills 67 points better?

Henry Jones had an excellent career and Kurt Schultz was a steal in the 7th round. Thomas Smith and Jeff Burris were far from busts.

The secondary was not the issue in any of our Superbowls.

This is ridiculous.

So why were we playing pick-up scrubs from other teams at Corner-Back in the Super Bowls like Mickey Washington and Kirby Jackson above our draft picks???  These guys were beyond awful.  The Giants, Redskins and Cowboys had their way with them.  Add in Kelso playing deep center field  and being unable to tackle anybody and Dwight Drane in Super Bowl #2 for the Bills and our Defensive Backfield was very, very bad!!!!

The only guy from that list that you could call a bust is JD Williams. We weren't really drafting corners high because we already had a number 1 and that was a different era. We lost the SB's because we got blown away up front. Kirby Jackson was a solid player. Again, just silliness.

T. Smith was a rookie in the SB XXVIII year and you know Levi's approach with respect to rookies and had a solid  non spectacular carrer but far from bust, and Burris came one year late.

It really wouldn't have changed much with the way our offense played after the first Super Bowl. The way the Bills turned the ball over was insane. Also, if Thurman ever played like the MVP level player he was in any of those games outside of the Giants game, we'd probably have won a SB or two (or at least had a better shot).

XXVI - Thurman: 10 rushing attempts for 13 yards & 1 TD; 4 receptions for 27 yards

Kenneth Davis: 4 rushing attempts for 17 yards; 4 receptions for 38 yards.......... Winner: Kevin Davis? Then again, fumbling the ball half a dozen times probably sealed their fate more than anything.

XXVII - Thurman: 11 rushing attempts for 19 yards & 1 TD; 4 receptions for 10 yards, 1 fumble

Kenneth Davis: 15 rushing attempts for 86 yards; 3 receptions for 16 yards...... Winner: Kenneth Davis? Again, turnovers killed us with 9 total! Kelly had 3, Reich had 4, Thurman had 1 and Tasker had 1.

XXVIII - Thurman: 16 attempts for 37 yards & 1 TD; 7 receptions for 52 yards, 2 fumbles

Kenneth Davis: 9 attempts for 38 yards, 3 receptions for -5 yards....... Winner: Thomas I guess, though he did awful too. But hey, the team only had 3 turnovers this game with Thurman being 2 of them! Big improvement!

I totally disagree here!  He was our #1 for quite a few years and he was sorely underrated IMHO.  I think of him like I do McGee-they made not have made PB's for their corner play but they were studs in the secondary and could be trusted to be left on an island.
