Eagles officially choose Wentz over Foles

You really think the Eagles will pick up his 20mill option just for the chance of a trade? Eagles won't get Squat for Foles. He is as good as a free agent at this point.

Not so sure about this.  We got a high third for Tyrod. Foles could easily get a 2nd.  The demand for QB is high and there are few good rookies this year.  You think a team like Jacksonville who has a lot of talent right now wants to draft a rookie?  The guy has a super bowl on his resume.  That means something.

The pressure will be on Wentz now. First, he needs to stay healthy, then he really needs to get them to the playoffs next year after what Foles has done. If they don't make the playoffs or Wentz is out for any period of time, the Philly press is going to be relentless on if they kept the right QB.

He got them to the playoffs in 2017 so it certainly wouldn't break any ground.

Yea, but no. Because the Eagles aren't keeping him.   How in the world is his contract relevant?

People need to understand Foles contract.

Even if the Eagles pick up his option (which is due 1 week after the Super Bowl) Foles can turn down the option and become a FA.

Here are the details:

Contract Notes:

  • $7M fully guaranteed at signing (signing bonus+ 2017 salary + 2018 roster bonus)
  • 2018 Roster Bonus: $3M (due 3/18)
  • 2018 : $2M signing bonus + $7M of incentives based on starting, playoffs , & Pro Bowl
  • 2018 Per Game Played (33% snaps): $250,000, increases to $500,000 with a game win
  • 2018 Per Playoff Game Played (33% snaps): $500,000, increases to $1M with a playoff win
  • Eagles must exercise 2019 option 1 week after the Super Bowl
  • Foles has 5 days after the Eagles' decision to exercise. If he declines he must payback $2M of the 2018 bonus
  • 2019 salary fully guarantees on 3/18/2019
  • 2020-2021 years automatically void if on the roster 23 days before the 2019 league year

Lots of guys come into the league with all the talent in the world.  The difference is what happens between the ears.  Foles has proven he can do it.  I'm not sure Wentz has.  I think this is a way bigger risk than people are acknowledging.

Plus, what are you really looking for when searching for a QB?  You are looking for a guy that can you to and win a SB.  Nick Foles has done that.

Please. Foles didn't get them to that Super Bowl. Wentz did the large majority of the QBing that season. When Foles QB'd that team went 2-1 before the playoffs, while under Wentz they went 11-2. And that 2-1 was against the 3-13 Giants, the 6-10 Raiders and a loss with zero points scored against the 9-7 Cowboys. Foles played decently and well in the playoffs, but he didn't get them that championship. He took the baton and ran pretty well the last few miles of the marathon.

They had home field advantage throughout the playoffs and that was huge.

Foles has been in a great situation, because each year he's come in late and teams don't have a ton of video on him. Over a whole season, Foles can be figured out.

I hope you're right that Foles can be a franchise guy but you have to prove that over more than a few games a season.

Obvious move imo. Foles, for all the hype, is a proven mediocre QB. A lesser Flacco in my mind. Wentz is the clear favorite there.

You know what I 100% agree. He is an RPO only QB. You saw it Sunday. The Saints totally shut down the run to the point the Eagles gave up on it which rendered the RPO useless and without the easy single defender reads that gives the QB Foles regressed to what he is. Mediocre.

Foles has seemed weak at times, but he also has played great last year and WON A SUPERBOWL, what you ask of a QB!

In 2013 he was awesome: 27 TDs to only 2 INTs, 119.2 rating. Those are AMAZING stats! So to say Wentz has proven himself while not Foles is disingenuous. He won the big one and had a year of dominance even if 5 years ago.

BTW I too would pick Wentz, but it's not as easy as a choice as some of guys make it out to be. One thing is sure: Foles can't get no respect LOL Yes he is a form of Flacco to me. But superior game managers like him are precious, and he has been clutch too. A good fit for many teams.

Dudes been around for how many years? It’s not like he is some rookie qb.

Foles essentially is after the Super bowl unless the Eagles commit 20mill in salary cap for the chance of a trade with another team. And even if they do he can give them 2 mill back and opt out to be a FA. The Eagles do not hold the cards here at all.

So yeah, Foles is a FA unless the Eagles want to commit to him as a starter., which this news states otherwise.  Foles and his agent would be damn fools to walk away from what will most likely be Cousins $$$ in the offseason even if Philly was going to pay 20mill for a BU QB.

I think it's Wentz who gets no respect. You know, the MVP frontrunner in 2017 prior to all this Foles mania.

Yep.  Kinda a no brainer.  Philly didn't wait too long to announce the obvious, either.

I was more refuting his claim that nobody would give anything for him.

That's funny.  Wentz was 5-6 and the Eagles were dead in the water.  Foles comes in and goes 4-1 and gets them to the playoff, winning a playoff game and nearly getting them to the NFCC game.  Again.

Who are they bringing in as their December/January QB for next year?

Considering Wentz has never played in a postseason game, we have no idea who he'd fare. All we know is that he was an MVP frontrunner before the injury after already clinching a near top seed in 2017. He wasn't fully healthy in 2018 and Foles didn't exactly light it up in the postseason.

This is such a false narrative. Foles is a decent player who went berserk in the 2017 playoffs. He also went berserk in 2013 for a short stretch. There isn't nearly enough data to suggest he's a top tier QB. Carson Wentz has never played poorly and is a franchise QB.
