Cleveland Browns to hire Freddie Kitchens as HC

Recommended Posts

Reaction I am seeing from some Cleveland friends on social media is totally positive.  I'd never heard of the guy but seems Cleveland fans like the decision

I'm dead serious, this is a nice move by Cleveland.

After reading what he has been able to do recently this is obviously not the sexy choice, but probably better overall for development and team continuity.

Is he from the Andy Reid coaching tree?

I was thinking ‘fat white guys’ must be the way to go.

Gregg Williams is a tool but somehow he is becoming more likeable, or is it just me?

It's just you

So what happens to Gregg Williams now, who did a pretty good job?

Williams was relieved of his duties.

Sucked for him cuz he lead a team who had won 3 of 40 games to 5 wins in 8.  He’ll be a coaching candidate next year.

It will be interesting to see who Kitchens brings in to run the D.  Since he is totally an offensive coach he’ll need a strong D coordinator.

Perhaps Vance Joseph?

I guess it depends on the tree:

The fitting topper to all this would be some guy ‘Gilloolys’ Gregggggggggg when he stops by the Cleveland front office to pick up his last paycheque.  😁

The situation with Gregg is he wanted to stay as HC, or not come back. He likely asked to be cut loose as soon as he knew he wasn’t getting it so he could quickly pursue a DC job elsewhere. Wouldn’t surprise me if he ends up with Kingsbury, who could use his experience.

It's a Schwartz situation.

Perhaps Kitchens didn't want Gregg on his staff?

Who would after working with the guy.  He's been on 2 Hard Knocks & both times Gregg came off as the biggest jerk on the show.

Heard from several people with close ties to the team that they thought Kitchens was the right choice. That has been the case for weeks. Also heard that many players did not want Gregg retained as HC or DC and that they conveyed that to the powers that be in Berea.

The Execs are very smart to not be shortsighted by a few wins.  Williams is super arrogant and he will get prickly.  At the first sign of adversity he will alienate half the team and front office.  Good move to go in a different direction now.

Whoa.  I didn't see that coming.

No, not at all,

but If you think about it Kitchens had all the leverage he needed in my humble opinion.

Wow...talk about a rapid ascension...he will find out quickly being a HC is far more of a managerial role than a X's and O's role...gonna need to be doing a lot more than just runing a good offense for Mayfield...

Personally think he is in way over his head right now...usually these position coaches who get hired as a HC are assistant head coaches and are introduced to HC duties and decisions for fairly lengthy periods of time...the NFL is nowhere yo try and figure this stuff out on the fly...they are kind of throwing him into the deep end and hoping he can swim...

Odds arent in his favor. Even when the Browns try to follow the trend in the league they screw it up...

I will say he is similar to ALynn ... RB coach to interim OC where he called plays for 1st time, then straight to HC. He has a lot of nfl coaching experience and was QB coach under Arians in Arizona when Carson Palmer was there.

Well.  It sort of fits with the hypothesis in that article (other thread) that the NFL is run mad right now over young, offensive minded coaches with no track record of failure.

No...Lynn was an Assistant Head Coach for a LONG time where he was introduced to these types of things and was mentored on how to handle things and was in meetings when these things came up...Kitchens had none of this...

Basically this is the equivalent of giving a dude in the stands the key to a NASCAR car and telling him to go drive it...

He's got a long way to go before he sports a pair of manboobs that can compete with Greggo's.

Greggo will go be a DC for some other failing team. He'll never be a head coach again.
