A few weeks ago I had the chance to listen to big Ted Washington on One Bills Drive - this was the show where he kind of criticized the technique of the Bills DL.  At the end of the show, they asked Ted about the Hall Of Fame. He said he would love to go in, and if he were ever indicted he’d want to go in as a Bill.  Now that would be pretty cool.

Do you think Ted Washington in an NFL Hall Of Famer?

He had had a long career - 16 years

Made 4 Pro Bowls

Named All-Pro (1)

Take a look at his stats.  Ted was actually more than just a big fat space eater.  For a player of his size, he could take advantage of the attention Bruce, Bryce Paul, and Phil Hansen we’re getting, and actually get a handful of sacks.

Of course he excelled at taking on double team blocks and owning the LOS.  He anchored his body to the field and it was nearly impossible to move him with 2 guys.  He also prevented would-be blockers from getting to the second level to take on the LB’s.

But, unlike some NTs who just take up space, Ted actually made plays against the run.

But the most compelling stat was the difference he made to a his team’s rush defense.

I believe I read that nearly every year he started at NT, the rush defense was in the Top 5 in the NFL.

So place your vote and share a comment.  I vote YEA

He was a dominant player.  Wade Phillips almost quit as Bills HC when it was discussed whether to cut Washington to save cap dollars.  Teams built their entire defense around the guy.

There aren't stats for double team blocks swallowed up, or any of the other things Washington was good at.

Hard to gauge NT's.  I always thought he was stout and the very best run plugger in the league.
That being said, however, his stats seem to support those who say he was very good, but not necessarily HOF-worthy.  Some Stats below:

Yr Team W-L Rush Def Rank Games
1991 SF 10-6 5 16
1992 SF 14-2 4 16
1993 SF 10-6 16 12
1994 Denver 7-9 17 15
1995 Bflo 10-6 11 16
1996 Bflo 10-6 14 16
1997 Bflo 6-10 15 16
1998 Bflo 10-6 5 16
1999 Bflo 11-5 4 16
2000 Bflo 8-8 6 16
2001 Bears 13-3 2 16
2002 Bears 4-12 26 2
2003 Pats 14-2 4 10
2004 Raiders 5-11 22 16
2005 Raiders 4-12 25 16
2006 Browns 4-12 29 16
2007 Browns 10-6 27 1

For the position he played he was dominant, but that position rarely gets the accolades as the stats are not kept for plugging gaps and such, not like sacks and number of tackles. Trying to think of a more overlooked position in football where if you do your job the right way, others are successful - maybe fullback?

Was going to answer that the NFL would have to build an addition in Canton big enough to fit Ted into.... (insert deadpan drum sound here)

Mt Teddy was the best DT i ever saw play for the Bills and iv'e been watching for 30+ yrs. Not only is he the best DT for Bills but he is the best NT i ever saw . I believe there was a season when he had 123 tackles for the Bills. Mount Teddy defintely deserves a spot in the HOF.
