Our buddy Charles (aka Big Charles aka Chuckie) passed away unexpectedly the day after Christmas. His loss leaves a giant hole in our hearts and in our Club. Charles has been with us every Sunday at the Harp for several years and I personally cannot imagine starting off a Sunday any other way than with Charles’, “so we gonna win today Kristen?” And my, “oh you know, who knows Charles??” And his “I know” and a little chuckle response. When Charles first started working on Sundays I think he thought we might be out of our minds, but he quickly moved to “Bills supporter” and then dare I say (?) outright fan! One of my funniest and last memories is from a couple weeks ago, after we had beaten the Lions and the Pats lost as well, Charles walked all around the Harp proudly donning his Bills jersey yelling, “PATS FANS! THIS WAY, FOLLOW ME...THERE’S PLENTY OF ROOM ON THE BUFFALO BILLS BANDWAGON!! COME JOIN US!” Charles was cracking himself up as he did so. Despite many a late Saturday night working at the Harp, with often little sleep, Charles always showed up for us on Sunday to greet everyone with a smile and moment to chat, and to quietly and discreetly aid us with any issues that might arise. Whether you ever spoke to Charles or not, trust me when I say he made the game day experience that you enjoy at the Harp possible. Week in and week out. With a smile and a chuckle. And hugs, many hugs. Charles, thank you for all your time that you spent away from your family to make our days better. You are a part of the Bills Backers family and we will keep you in our hearts always. Sundays will never be the same. This Sunday, if you are going to the Harp, we ask you to honor Charles’ memory by being sensitive to the emotions of Charles’ Harp family as they are grieving as well. If you have a Charles story of your own or photos you would like to share with the group, please do. Rest easy, Charles. We love you." This is a shocker. He is in WNY visitng from southern New Hampshire, and had a chance to meet him for the first time on Sunday, then learned Wednesday about his death. He had pictures on his cell phone. Don't live in Boston anymore, but I was part of a crew in the late 80s that used to get together for the games upstairs at the Fours on Canal (before the Bills Backers). IIRC, the group moved over to the Bell in Hand and then over to the Harp. Always thought it strange to have a Bills club across the street at the time from the Boston Garden. Bills fans went from the Fours, to the Bell In Hand, and then the Harp. There is/was a rival Backers group, the Fenway Bills Backers, that meet at the Bleacher Bar on Lansdowne.
