Kyle Williams: Officially Retires

There have been many great DT’s in Bills history but I think that Kyle, perhaps, was one of the best when you take into account his success, production, longetivity and meaning to the Bills franchise.

 

Take a look at these numbers:

 

13 years, 5 Pro Bowls, 48.5 sacks

 

A few others worth considering for their time in Buffalo :

 

Fred Smerlas

10 years, 1 All Pro, 4 Pro Bowls (16.5 sacks)

 

Ted Washington

5 years, 3 Pro Bowls, (19.5 sacks)

I think he may garner HOF consideration at some point down the road. Steve Buerlein made the comment today that since 2006, KW has more tackles than any other interior defensive lineman in the game. I found that interesting.

In the big picture it was the right way to send Kyle off today.

yep. I watched him closely for years.
he was not the quickest off the ball. nor did he ever draw double teams. and when he shifted the pre snap call on the line it was often unnecessary.

He is my Buffalo Bills Hero of all time. 95 is my favorite

Why do we love Kyle Williams?

·         We loved that backflip in college

·         We loved when this LSU Tiger, looking more like a Teddy Bear, came to Buffalo

·         We loved how the news from training camp day after day was Williams made another play

·         We loved that he started as a rookie

·         We loved that he was a fifth round pick

·         We loved that he was tough and still a sportsman

·         We loved how after a couple of years he knew he was supposed to be a leader, but he didn’t know how

·         We loved how he started speaking up and doing more, sort of awkwardly at first, doing it because he knew HE had to do it

·         We loved how he embraced our new owners and our new GM and our new coach

·         We loved how eventually it was all there, the play, the leadership, the stability in tough times, the self-assured modesty, the graciousness

·         We loved the leadership

·         We loved watching him get to the playoffs

·         We loved the message – that this is what can happen if you commit completely to becoming everything you can be

·         We loved how, through all of that, he was still a kid playing a game

·         We love him like family.

Fred was a true NT. That position is absolutely horrible on the body and he played that position well for a decade plus.

 

JMO, but if the Bills kept Smerlas one more year they would have won SB 25. No way the Giants gash the Bills on the ground the way they did with Fred out there.

I don't have great recollections of Freddy.  I had little kids and wasn't watching the Bills as much as I do now.  Still, I'd guess you're right.  Kyle wasn't the best tackle in the sense that he could dominate other teams.    But he did EVERYTHING at a really high level.  He played, without the same size and length, like JJ Watt plays, all out determination mixed with great athletic ability, every play.  Kyle couldn't dominate like Watt, but that was his style.  Smerlas could dominate.

Who remembers when he almost single handedly won us the Steelers game in 2010 , It was the Stevie Johnson drop game where he blamed God... Just look at what PFF says about Williams, arguably the best DT that year , and here's the excerpt from the Steelers game, going against an all pro C ..

If you asked me what the best performance at any position in the 2010 season was, then I’d be looking at Week 12 when the Bills hosted the Steelers. While much of the postgame focus was on Steve Johnson and his five drops (including one that would have won the game), I watched in amazement at what Kyle Williams did in his 74 defensive snaps.
 
It wasn’t perfect, but it was pretty close. 29.73% of his snaps were graded positively, a ridiculously high margin as Williams dominated the Steelers interior for five quarters, with both Maurkice Pouncey and Chris Kemoeatu absorbing the brunt of his ability. Take what Williams did with 5:25 left in the first half: bursting through the A-gap with such explosiveness that neither Pouncey or Kemoeatu can do anything but watch as he engulfs Ben Roethlisberger. Or, with 16 seconds left in the first quarter, shooting off the line so quickly that Pouncey couldn’t pick him up, Williams met Rashad Mendenhall five yards in the backfield as he received the ball.
 
There are many more highlights, but I’m sure you get the point. It was certainly a game worth re-watching.
