It's just a few games, but defense is still king

The almighty Rams offense held to 6 points by an unreal Bears defense.

The unstoppable Chiefs offense taken to overtime by an extraordinary Ravens defense.

The exquisite Saints offense stuffed by the surprising Cowboys defense.

Maybe reports of the death of defenses were exaggerated, and maybe a defensive-minded coach can succeed.

When the rules revert back to what they were in the 80s, yes, perhaps defense can be king.  But it's not going to happen.

I always love how one weekend's worth of games morphs into the definitive evidence that defense is back...yet nothing really changed  The league is built for, over the long haul of an entire season, offense to win out far more often than it loses.

The real question is what is sustainable as opposed to outliers. Keep in mind that the Ravens have lost to the Browns this season. The cowboys lost a home game to the Titans. And the Bears, the best of these 3 teams, lost while giving up 31 to Brock Osweiler.

Defense doesn't always travel and these teams that score blow out the bad teams. Ensuring home playoff games. Its the equivalent of trying to win a world series with home runs and no pitching, so much needs to break right to even have a chance, like laughable calls in favor of Dallas in each game. Your margin for error is razor thin, are their examples, sure, can they win, likely not, is it the most expideint course, absolutely not

Having some semblance of offense is good too

64 points scored last 3 games since bye. Should have been enough to be 3-0 against 3 bad teams

Record 1-2 vs 3-8 Jags W, 5-6 Fins L, 3-9 Jets L

Our top 2 defense should be wrecking these guys (Bortles, Tannesuck and rookie Darnold) like the Bears did last night to Rams, or the Cowboys did to Saints, such an overrated defense here.

This whole thing is taken so incredibly far out of context.

What myself and people had been saying before we drafted Allen is it's great to have an awesome defense...but it's not sustainable for long-term success if that's what you're building around without a franchise QB. It's incredibly tough to keep an elite defense for a prolonged amount of time, sometimes it doesn't even last more than a couple of years.

On the other hand...having a franchise QB can make you a perennial force. It is way easier to build a SB contending team long-term than it is if you build around a defense.

The Bears window with the defense is probably a couple of seasons, but they're going to start losing players. At that point when their defense comes down a level, they're going to have to depend on Trubisky or whoever the QB is to be running a pretty competent offense to compliment what will still probably be a good, but not great unit anymore.

There isn't a death of defenses...they just offer you a much smaller window than if you have a great offense led by a star QB.

McDermott's problem isn't that he's a defensive minded coach...it's that he's a horrific game manager and is way too conservative. He coaches to keep it close, not to win.

We have the 2nd ranked defense. We are 4-9. Defense is not still king.

ST's & a Offense that can stay on the field helps immensely  !!

Saying that D doesn't win championships is like saying having a good running game doesn't mean anything in winning a championship !! The last 2 SB champs have had really good RB's to take the pressure off the QB but according to the experts good RB's are a dime a dozen & a run game isn't that important !!

It takes all 3 phases of the team to win if your lacking in one place a good coach will find that weakness !!

That the Almighty Bears D that coughed up 30 to the Giants last week?

And the extraordinary Ravens D gave up 377 yards passing (Tyreek Hill destroyed that secondary for 139 at 17.4 per) and 30 1st downs.  And it was the KC that wrapped that game up in OT.
