He hasn't even been good in short yardage situations this year. He is a fine pass blocker. He has good body lean. But he has one run over 20 yards all year. Watch all the players not just the guy with the ball. Watch the run blocking. It was terrible all day. Clay is a far superior in-line blocker than Croom and the interior line was beaten most of the day. I love Ivory's effort too. But don't mistake running hard into the back of a guard as talent. Shady is still great. The O-line is a mess. Keep taking shots downfield and replace Bodine, Miller, and Mills next year. My comment was more nuanced - (1) the Bills brass should realize that a running back on the wrong side of 30 has almost by definition lost a little something in elusiveness and/or durability; (2) but if used correctly (and I think that means a lot more in the passing game, getting the ball in space) and with somewhat better personnel around him, he will still be a very valuable player. It would be foolish to think he is the same player as when he was 26 but As we both alluded too, that doesn’t mean his game is totally gone I think a fresh hoss in the 3rd or 4th would be good for the Bills. Jerome007 Posted November 26, 2018 Share Posted November 26, 2018 To me it was the blocking. There was no way from the games if he had lost a step or not since he was tackled as he touched the ball! Last 3 games, yes even the Jets, showed he indeed has lost a step. Still, he remains of the best out there and for the life of me I don't get why he is not more used as a receiver! I see it much differently, surprisingly this OLine group is better pass blockers than run blockers, which isn't saying much since they are barely better at that. Unfortunately McCoy is a total waste this season but next year with some better blockers and hopefully a few better veteran WR's and he should be back to dominant form since he wasn't used all that much this year. davefan66 Posted November 26, 2018 Share Posted November 26, 2018 Sit upper deck, got a great look at how fast holes closed yesterday. The jags front 7 are fast, as soon as a hole opened, they closed in. To effectively run against that type of defense, you need a north-south runner, not a shake-and-bake type of guy. Shady could have gained more yards most every time he hit the hole if he just ran and didn’t juke. By the time he finished stutter stepping, the D was on him. Would have preferred Ivory getting the ball more yesterday. That being said, seems he has lost a half step. Against a fast defense it’s more apparent, but it’s been all season he isn’t hitting the hole as well as he used to. Not saying he’s washed up, last week he had a heck of a game. Also not saying it’s entirely his fault as the offensive lines blocking isn’t great. Just that he’s not hitting the hole like he has in the past. racketmaster Posted November 26, 2018 Share Posted November 26, 2018 The fact that most of us wonder if McCoy is even better than a journeyman like Chris Ivory should tell you all you need to know. McCoy will show flashes of greatness from time to time but he is not the same player he once was. Watch the league and you will see how many dynamic and explosive backs there are playing right now. Let McCoy finish the year but I would be looking for an upgrade next year. I don't want him back because veterans of his status will expect to play a lot (maybe still start) and it will be to the detriment of the offense. We need an explosive RB, someone who can hit the hole and rip off chunk yards or take it the distance and can also be a factor in the passing game. Too many times, McCoy dances around and is tackled for a loss of minimal gain putting the offense if 2nd or 3rd and long situations. DuckyBoys Posted November 26, 2018 Share Posted November 26, 2018 He is done as a difference maker. McCoy relies on speed/quickness and he has lost a step if not more. He might be able to stay around a few years if he accepts a role as a third down specialist or change of pace in a offense that throws to the backs a lot.
