Bills have #27th ranked Defense according to ESPN

ypp is a solid stat, we are top 3 or so there.

we have good over all safety play, one just disgusting CB in tre, and decent 2nd through 4th cb play.  our pass rush has been decent over all, and our run D has been solid, just one really bad showing.

our weakest positing has been LB, but with a lot of improvement shown there, and edmunds barely old enough to drive, there is a lot of upside.

if allen never got hurt we'd be 500, maybe even with a flukey chance at being over 500.

Rodak really is an idiot. He makes two points in here that are so diametrically opposed

1) Bills D is really not good cause PPG against ranks 19th in the league( that includes the Pick 6s etc)

2) Bills D stinks as the opposition has the best average drive start seen in the NFL since  2010 ..therefore the Bills cannot give up a lot of yards.

So, of course, that plethora of short fields have nothing to do with PPG...i mean the logic there is truly staggering ..yea, the bills gave up 4 yards that dive and the opposition scored 3 points..Bills D stinks!

Yep, DVOA rank is #2, but Bills D sucks ..BTW, DVOA takes into account a ton more than score and yards

He truly is an idiot with that comment

BTW, the Kansas City guy is not to smart either. Talks about all the KC sacks fails to mention when they come. Is it in the first quarter when came is close? Or are they coming 2nd half when the Chiefs are up by 10 or more?

Consider the source.  Rodak is still salty his declaration the 2017's Bills season was "...over before it began..." blew up in his face and made him look like a chump.

Does that factor in pick 6's? Because those points are not on the Defense.  or very short field from a fumble turnover?  Even if the D held them to 3 it's still easy points .

It's just points.  Two of our wins were blowouts.  Most of our losses were blowouts.  The D has had its great moments, for sure, though.

BS. We also play defense as much as any other team. We have to be close to the top in three and outs.

The always start with the worse field position so there isn’t that many yards to give up

Saints and Cheifs are #1 and #2 according to this. “Stats that matter”. Haha. This should be a fireable offense really.

While initially my response was ‘people need to stop reading and sharing espn and contributing anything to their withering relevance so they just die’

but actually one price of insight is meaningful...

“opponents are starting with the best average field position seen in the NFL since 2010, which limits how many yards Buffalo's defense can give up.”

Their very good ypg is skewed by their wretched offense. Rex parlayed this statistical phenomenon into “defensive genius” despite very mixed results in pints allowed during his tenures.

Better Bills offense and the opposing offenses would have more field in front of them on average.

So as offense improves overs expect this to shift.

IMO points are all that matter

A lot of our defense's success has to do with the fact that opposing offenses didn't need to score to beat us.

I don't think that is true. The defense has played quite well in the first half of most games, not just in the second half.

You have to take into account defensive snaps into this. Doesn't matter if you have shorter fields of you have twice as many drives.

The Bills have a good defense. We see it with our own eyes. The times they have struggled have often been directly due to the offense putting them in putrid positions.

Points per game is more important, but the Bills have an extremely skewed metric because of the points the offense has given up due to turnovers or just poor field position.

Rodak's remark about short fields isn't very meaningful, actually.  The fact that Bills opponents are facing short fields could explain why the Bills are only giving up 25.9 yards per drive - 2nd best in the NFL.

But it doesn't explain some other things...

The Bills offense has a lot of 3-and-outs and turnovers, so I'm guessing the Bills face more drive starts than other Ds.   I know for sure only five defensive units have had to face more plays.  The Bills D is playing under duress.

Yet the Bills D only gives up 4.9 yards per play - 2nd best in the NFL.

And the Bills lead the league in tackles for a loss and forced fumbles.

This D is pretty good.

Ok so we agree a horrid offense skews everything.

So so they might be better or might be worse than they appear based this season.

id also suggest when you are getting your face stomped in and inept on offense, teams can throttle back and convert to just grinding out the clock with a comfortable lead.

Defense is good, i don’t think they’ve yet proven they are great.
