Obama was more like Trump in that he saw previous candidates (Gore, Kerry) not punch back as hard as they should after unfair attacks against them. Trump and Obama are similar in that respect. Americans want a fighter who would shake up the paralysis in Washington. Obama wasn't able to do that. Trump hasn't been able to do that yet either.
