You are most likely correct on the 5.5 years thing... fingers crossed, but losing faith.

I'm actually way more confident. If Trump has to drop to this level of bigotry just to get the blood pumping in his deplorable base, he is in trouble. This will not work.

And, all those Republicans not speaking out who still have ambitions for higher office will always have to confront that question of why they didn't say anything? The GOP is in trouble

Do you really think the story will have that much staying power though? I tend to doubt it. We're over a year and a half out from going to the ballot box in a general... had this gone down in September/October 2020, then I'd be more inclined to buy that take.

But this far out I have a feeling there will be hundreds of "explosive" type stories (from all sides/partisanships) which will make people forget about this (at least in terms of a primary voting motivation).

If the Dems are smart, they won't let it die, or the Epstein story. But who knows, an economic or foreign policy situation might arise that will let all the air out of this balloon

(And, just for clarity -- that's just my opinion. I got 2016 wrong, so what do I know?)

Nobody knows anything!  Especially after 2016!

I'm not looking to be adversarial, but take this for what you consider it worth:

You are 100%, almost inconceivably, wrong about what he says and how often he says it.  I would attribute that to listening only to voices that sound like yours, or the fact that you're my old buddy Smitty the practical joker.

His approval rating is impacted in large part because there is a chorus of voices screaming in unsion "JOKE", then "RACIST" then "SEXUAL PREDATOR", then "TAX CHEAT" then "TREASON" then "OBSTRUCTOR" and now back "SEXUAL PREDATOR".  All of this, btw, wrapped up in the theory  that he can't stay on message. Soundbite tyranny.

And, imo, I think of people like  you as "extended warranty" voters, buying what's sold without even questioning the cost or the value of the purchase.

That last part probably sounds adversarial, but it isn't. Some people find comfort in the extended warranty.

Btw--on my comment on soundbites, I get the argument that Trump causes some of that. I don't disagree, my point is only that is not ALL  he does.

Considering he tweets this stuff practically everyday, I don't see how I could be wrong. It's all there right on his tweeter feed.

Trump uses his sound bites to control the narrative. They have zero plan whatsoever on how to fix immigration, and now instead of the media focusing on kids in cages, and the inhumane treatment of some people at the Southern Border Detention Facilities, that entire news cycle is gone. Now the Democrat Party has now been labelled as socialists with the face of the party having become 4 Congresswomen whose politics don't resemble anything close to the Democrat Leadership's.

It was brilliant on his part, and he's become a very savvy politician over the past couple years knowing how to attack his opponents.

Every attack Trump conducts via Twitter is very calculated. He hovers over the line of inappropriate, and probably crossed it this week, but it changed the narrative and it fires up his base and the bottom line is CNN and MSNBC aren't showing pictures of kids in cages anymore.

Short term goal, achieved.

There are plenty of smart Dems...but I don't know that they are smart (or at least as focused) as they need to be, collectively.

my take is that they want to run the most outlandish group, ever, to secure Trump's 2nd term.

how else can you explain the madness?????????

Doubtful.

Pelosi knows they can't win with AOC's policies as part of the Presidential Platform, which is why she's trying so hard to shut her up.

Unfortunately AOC is a crusader and an ideologue. She's under no threat of losing her seat next year and accordingly will continue pushing her policies until the cows come home.

Pelosi has no control over her, and it's probably going to destroy their chances of winning the Presidency next year.

I know, people are really freaking out right now. But its a long game and Trump is doing more long term damage to himself than anything.

I don't think they are, but they could surprise. - If the dems were smart they would get out front on the four rookies and either get them in line, or get rid of them. Trumps tactics made that harder for them to do. Those four are driving the left so much farther left than is sustainable. Bernie was fine cause he was a cute old man who was never gonna be given anything and he knew when to shut up- these ones are a much bigger threat to the dems.

I also don't think either side wants to embrace the Epstein story (as evidenced by how ignored it has been anywhere that isn't this board) It's mud for both sides of the isle.

You think both sides will be making tv commercials with the other sides candidate hanging and partying with a child trafficking rapist? I can only think the Democrats will be able to do that.

There is apparently a highly qualified immigrant from Jamaica, a successful business woman,  who will be running against her, as the GOP candidate... that will be the true litmus test.

I know she has her quirks, but she really isn't as stupid as many here seem to feel she is.  She is young....remember the learning curve we had to give Trump?

I don't think any other attack on Trump has worked, and this one has even less substance than the others. (at least so far) Socialites party together, it's not a big revelation. Clinton on the flight logs 2 dozen times is a much bigger deal. And there are a billion other threads to be pulled on.

What?  Hillary won't be drafted at the convention?  The Dems will have to go there as all of their other candidates are far worse in terms of ability to beat Trump.

We shall see.  Keep in mind, Clinton didn't have a Mar-Lago...and he (or his wife) are not running for president in 2020.  But, in the bigger picture, I don't think this will mean a single thing to voters...anybody who loves Trump is willing to look the other way on pretty much anything.

Oh the Dems have a lot to go with on Epstein Trump thing. Why was the guy who gave him the sweet deal in Trump's cabinet? Why was he hanging with a guy who he knew liked very young girls? What about the sex parties just the two of them had?

^^^^

That can be a very affective TV ad! Not to mention if Trump debates, MY GOD, Kamala Harris will destroy him. Trump better hope he gets Sleepy Joe instead

But in 2016 he promised the world and that drew in the marginal independent voters. I don't think he gets the fence sitters next time. Plus the Dem base should be way more fired up than when Hillary was running. (Her choose of a running mate was a huge mistake)

I'm not deeply plugged into this story, but I thought Trump banned E from Mar-a-Lago?

Yeah, that is true- I think the bigger issue is that the D's didn't push the Clintons out of the sphere of the DNC they way they should have been after the Clinton Empire got exposed as a House of Cards. It seems like some kind of Bill scandal was a matter of time.

Well, That's how you see it and I respect that- My perspective is that the scandals have mostly been fabricated- there are moral problems i have with him, but a lot of the big stuff is contrived. IMO.

We're going to disagree on this point, but the left has always jumped on Republicans. Always. They wrecked Sarah Palin, Mitt Romney, etc. with horrible, childish, embarrassing tactics. Lies so disgusting, most people simply couldn't stomach the fight any longer.

What you're seeing here is a person who has decided to push back, and a country that has been waiting for someone to do so.

Trump is too much of an ego to admit it, but I believe he saw the window to have a winning fight after watching Newt Gingrich jump on the moderator for starting the debate asking about his infidelity. Here.

From that article:

That effort never got traction with Gingrich because he's not a likable candidate.

Trump threw gas on it.

Barack Obama told his faithful to 'punch back twice as hard." Nancy Pelosi walked through the Tea Party crowd arm-in-arm with black congressman so they could falsely claim someone spit on them, or lying that the people who were against Obamacare carry swastikas to town hall meetings, like she's too stupid to know who LaRouche was.

Let's not pretend like what we're watching is suddenly unprecedented. The difference here is that the right got tired of the left's schitt and started pushing back, and the left, predictably, started squealing like Ned Beatty on a boating trip.

Now that was funny.
