Bucky and Sully Blackballed By The Pegulas?

I totally agree. What the !@#$ is wrong with these knuckledraggers who are against free speech and freedom of the press?

Are you kidding me? What the hell is wrong with a dissenting point of view? This is America you a$$holes.

I am really worried for this country if we believe it is alright to attack the free press and complain about freedom of speech. The Pegulas should be ashamed of themselves! What an un-American disgraceful act of cowardice. What a bunch of pussies who are afraid to hear criticism. You may disagree with Sullivan and Gleason, but it is an American right to be able to express their opinions without being blackballed by some arrogant thin skinned billionaire.

God save America from these morons.

I must have missed the news where somehow the Pegulas have prevented Bucky and Sully from watching the games.

Exactly.  They still spew their venom.  They just don't get press passes.  Has nothing to do with free speech.

Bupkis.

A new sports editor with fresh eyes and large market experience was hired by the BN.   He came in, observed what 'talent' he had and decided to "purge the roster" (through buyouts) and rebuild his team.    No different than what the Bills do every time a new HC is hired.

Sully and Bucky were 'retired in place' hacks long before they got the big check from uncle Warren.    Addition by subtraction may have been tough on their egos, but guys like that are always the last to see the writing on the wall...

I'm so happy to finish the sports section (yes, I still read the actual paper) without seething at those two aholes.

Question, when did either of them actually prove that they deserved free entrance to games? I don't recall either of them citing actual sources. They write columns, why should they be entitled to access to the players and press conferences when all they do is write "gotcha" stories with negative takes. They can write bitter columns just watching the games like the rest of us.

The aforementioned journalists above were often more critical, more scathing in their reports on the Bills and Sabres than Sully or Bucky ever were. But they had class and knew that certain venues, like bars and restaurants, were not for pressing matters, being rude, and acting unprofessionally. As critical as they were, they had the respect of people in the organizations, from ownership on down. And they knew how to turn it off and have a pour of scotch with their subjects once in a while, which is why they could maintain relationships and be privy to more information.

Bucky and Sully were the antithesis of that behavior. Being rude and insulting got them nowhere.

I've seen this posted a couple of times.  Was there an incident with the two and certain Bills/Sabres employees?

I came across and interesting interview on Twitter with Bucky Gleason.  In the interview he sounds good about a number of topics.  Including the Buffalo News - he said that the new management from outside of Buffalo too over and didn’t understand Buffalo sports.  He said they bought into the Twitter mob that said they were too negative.  So when they took away his column, he knew it was time to leave.

He also said that the Pegulas and the Bills significantly influence the local media either directly ($$$$) or indirectly (advertising $$$) - alluding to WGR and other outlets in Buffalo.

Later he said that they both tried to get press credentials from the Bills to cover the team.  The Bills denied their website The Maven - which is kind of like a free version of The Athletic - and are the only team in the NFL team to deny press rights to The Maven.  He later tried getting credentialed through 1270 AM, where he has a radio show.  1270 AM was already approved but since Bucky and Sully weren’t on the original press list for 1270, they were again denied.  Again, Bucky says this is very rare in the NFL.

His take is that the Pegulas and The Bills are essentially blackballing Bucky and Sully because they don’t like how critical the duo has been.  In his mind, this is an atrocious and petty thing to do to a journalist.

Its a facinating interview.  Check it out:

I would think if Sully and Bucky were part of the PFWA, that there would be a big problem on behalf of the association if its members were denied press credentials.

They would have a hard time qualifying for PFWA membership, given their popgun website:

http://www.profootballwriters.org/about-the-pfwa/join-the-pfwa/

Membership in the Professional Football Writers of America is open to those who fit the following criteria:

1. He/she must be employed by a media organization of general circulation, which regularly assigns reporters to cover professional football.

2. Such an employee must be one of the following:

  • A. A reporter assigned regularly to cover professional football.
  • B. A sports editor, assistant sports editor or head of a sports desk.
  • C. A regular sports columnist.
  • D. Anyone certified by his/her sports editor as a football specialist who is not covered in paragraphs A, B or C.

3. Anyone who does not qualify under sections 1 and 2 above may be granted membership on a case-by-case basis by the membership committee and president, but only if the applicant meets the following criteria:

  • A. He/she is an employee of a weekly newspaper or news magazine, which covers professional football on a regular basis, and the applicant is assigned to such coverage.
  • B. He/she is an employee of a daily newspaper of specialized circulation (such as a foreign language or neighborhood newspaper) which regularly assigns reporters to cover professional football.
  • C. He/she is a sports editor or regular columnist of a daily newspaper of general circulation that does not regularly assign reporters to cover professional football.
  • D. He/she is an employee, editor or owner of a web site which specializes in professional football.
  • E. He/she is a writer for a media enterprise who primarily is responsible for covering professional football or related subjects such as college football as it pertains to the NFL Draft.

4. In addition to meeting appropriate criteria for acceptance at outlined herein, in order to maintain membership status, members must actively support the purposes, policies and goals of the PFWA as outlined in Article II of this PFWA Constitution. Failure to do so will result in termination of PFWA membership.

Don’t think I’d classify them as “incidents” so much as simply rude social behavior.

While I disagreed with that column.  From what I recall, it was basically slide football back and put a bunch of eggs into the basketball program and take that to a high (national) level.   I did think that it made some valid points, and I'm not going to bash a columnist for writing his/her opinion.  It did create some dialogue between me and some friends and people online.  I certainly don't want these guys locked out and blacklisted by not cow-towing to ownership due to financial and access leverage.

Well, you have compartmentalized Bucky's consistent negativity towards UB into the one column I referenced, but it was far more than that. And I am not after cow-towing, but simply objectivity.

With every byline, Bucky was critical of UB, and what exactly does 'sliding football back and put a bunch of eggs into the basketball program' mean?  It means nothing.  It's a nebulous, unsubstantiated way of sounding like you have an understanding about UB's athletic finances and know what you are talking about.  If you'd like some recent context, here's an article about the state of the program from THIS YEAR before they hired our new AD Mark Alnutt. Alnutt has already made a significant impact, but here Bucky thinks he needs to offer up candidates and train the prospective AD into believing that football will never matter here.

https://buffalonews.com/2018/01/18/bucky-gleason-greenes-exit-opens-door-to-another-opportunity-for-ub/

The condescension and number of backhanded compliments in it are blood-boiling. And poor Bucky now wants to know why he can't get press credentials.  Boo fricking hoo.  He should be banned from the UB campus.  It's no surprise to me that the Buffalo News finally shut him down.

Like any school, UB's athletic programs are only as successful as the level of athletes they can recruit to play here.  We now have coaches in place that have demonstrated considerable acumen in that critical department, and the results are speaking for themselves.

And if you have not seen it yet, here is exactly why UB is succeeding... coaches like strength coach Lewis Caralla.

Gives me goosebumps!!! GO BULLS!!!

What sports columnist regularly cites sources in columns that are editorialized? I'm not sure you get what they do. I'm not a huge fan of it, but when does Stephen A cite sources on first take? They're the written version of that show.

Do the different Bills bloggers get press credentials?

That's exactly their issue here, and where they run into a problem. They still have a radio show though, right?

He was an ahole with UB.  He was pretty good writing about my Bonnies, but would then always say that Mark Schmidt should be going for bigger jobs............And, Adams should transfer.............He asked Canisius' young star if he was going to transfer and the kid replied "What are you talking about?  I'm not even thinking about that!"

Too bad for them, I guess. Who's to say those guys didn't leak inside info they knew of? And that's why the Pegulas have told them to hit the bricks since they don't want any leaks anymore.

That's just speculation but aside from that, these two clowns would constantly contradict their own viewpoints from column to column. Whatever seemed like the trendy view was, they'd run with it. And the excitement they'd show in talking about just how bad this team or that team would beat the Bills showed their inability to be unbiased and objective when covering the Bills. They'd throw around random negativity everywhere and try to hide behind their "we just tell it like it is" schtick. No you don't. You tell it how you subjectivity see it. That's why they wrote opinion pieces for TBN.

The press is an important part of any large public entity but at a certain point you gotta weed the garden and these schmucks are like that super prickly weird crappy grass you don't see but step on while you're trying to have a nice barefoot stroll in the backyard on a nice day.

My point being that columnists don't really need press credentials.

Bucky loves to suck up to the locals. UBs heinous crime was firing local legend Reggie Witherspoon. Surely the basketball program would whither and die without ol' Reggie at the helm? (In case you forgot, RW was a great coach because we won 20 games twice.)

Note the "mistake" Bucky said UB made was not hiring someone with local ties. (Read: someone who would implement Bucky's radical athletic downgrade.)

UB keeps ignoring Bucky's advice and keeps getting better. And now Bucky shows what big stones he has on Twitter by a) congratulating UB for having football and both basketball programs reach ranked or near-ranked status, then b) turn around and argue that he was still right about downgrading.
