PreSeason vs Garbage Time

Can someone explain to me the difference between preseaon and garbage time?

the preseason is all about "we can't play our starters as they could get hurt"..or " we need to get guys experience and find what the backups can do in a real game situation"

and then in garbage time, like last night..I see Keenum, Von MIller etc all in the game with 2 minutes to go and the Broncos up 45-10? It amazed me in Green Bay when starters from both teams, including a banged-up Aaron Rodgers, were still in the game late 4th quarter.

So can someone explain the difference for me?

I get having rookies like Rosen and Allen in to get the reps they can..but I am talking veteran key players on teams.

it's becoming garbagetime when the losing team SUDDENLY starts putting together a few first downs and completing passes and running for short yardage successfully

it's officially garbagetime when more than one fan of the losing team in the room moans "why haven't they been doing this all game"?

because it's garbagetime, sport, the winning team has adjusted the D and is letting you have 4 yards while 40 seconds tick off the clock

running up the score sometimes can't avoided, if you are up 35-0 in the 4th though, please don't onside kick, spear or dish out other forms of cheap shots or taunt

Certainly not the case for every player, but it'd sure suck if I missed a performance based incentive because I got benched for playing too well.

Miller has a $114M contract, there's no way he should have been in there. Imagine if he popped an ACL in the final minutes? There would be a mob at the airport waiting for Vance Joseph.

in the 16-0 Pats season, Bellichick would leave Brady and a lot of starters in games right until the end. He would also have them score TDs instead of FGS and go for 2. He did this against us in that night game at the Ralph where they destroyed us. It always annoyed me that the Pats tempted fate so much by doing that throughout that season but were never punished by bad luck and having a player injured for nothing or were ever the victims of some embarrassed opposing player trying to get even with a dirty hit. Leaving your starters in like last night for the Broncos is a little different but equally as risky. If any of their players blew out knee or broke a leg the coach would have been gone by this morning.

They get PAID for sacks/catches/tackles/TD’s , etc when the game counts? Von Miller was making money in that game. When in doubt, always look to who’s making money. Preseason? Thanks, I’ll just have another Gatorade.

Until they met David Tyree.

While I didn't see the game, it might be about two messages, the first being that unless you are playing well regularly, you haven't earned the right to rest. The second might be as simple as the fact that while they are playing well, possibly for the first time this season, the HC wants to maintain that impetus, going into the next game.

As regards the incentives side of things, I'm not sure thatplayers are that worried about it this early in the season. And I'd be pretty sure that no HCs are, as they wouldn't be doing their jobs right if that was the case.

I think also, it can be the case that scores can get run up, partly by accident, when one team is playing so badly. Basic runs, and short passes can easily end up as big gains or TDs if the opposition misses tackles, and if they are having a 'mare, it's more than likely they will do so.

well, if Von Miller, Aaron Rodgers, etc need to prove their value late in a blowout, that's pretty dumb. And I care not whether someone scores..but its ptrdominate in pro football where coach keeps his starters/superstars in garbage time when the outcome has CLEARLY been decided.

If it about reps and getting better, then they should play them more in the preseason as well. Cause @ 45-10 with 5 minutes to go, ain't nothing but glorified practice at that point anyway.

The whole thing is just one of those stupid " thats the way its always been" things that makes no sense. Least Harbaugh pulled Flaco at 40-0 in the 3rd.

In Thursday nights case, yes keenum and other starters probably shouldn't have been playing with 2 mins left. However, I do remember a game about 10 years ago, I believe it was the Colts and Denver (could be wrong about Denver). The Colts were down like 12 points with a min and a half remaining. Seemingly impossible to come back and win, but they did somehow. The scored something like 14 points in 20 seconds or something.

It can be tough with just 45 active and several of those being specialists but.... totally agree that you get the all pro players out
