Former Seahawks Punter Jon Ryan to visit Bills on Tuesday

Schmidt does not crush the ball. His long all of last year was 60, and his long in preseason (short sample, but beautiful weather) is just 49. Cory Carter had a bigger leg.

I am not sure Ryan is getting the job, because Schmidt is consistent and does a nice job pinning teams inside the 20. But Ryan would not make a beeline here if he didn't have a chance.

Well, over the length of his career Ryan has been a top half of the league punter. Consistent. Schmidt has kicked in the swirling Buffalo wind for a few seasons now and may have a....leg up....in the competition.

If all evens out I have to think whoever handles Haush's balls best will get a crack to slip in.

As others have pointed out, it's not just about distance. Dropping them inside the 20 is also important, but another key is placement. I haven't been watching Carter, but the punt he got injured on was a really nice one -- good distance, and pinned the returner near the sidelines. Schmidt isn't bad at that either, but it may be that they're looking for someone with the same leg but a bit more precision placement.

Jon Ryan is signing one day after being released. He’s not a camp leg, dude is going to be the starting punter opening day. Schmidt might as well start looking at the other 31 teams.

For sure Schmidt is just not good enough and you can bet Ryan received inside information the job was open.  This guy is not coming here as a camp leg at this point in his career

keeping 2 punters perhaps?  Good field position play.  Have Ryan kick the long balls, and Schmidt kick when we need to pin someone inside the 20.  Kind of insane to take 2 roster spots on punters, but if we are thinking we need field-position, this is an interesting route.

You can almost make a case for two place kickers (one for FGs and one kickoff specialist), but two punters? No.
