Bills-Browns Post Game Reports

CLEVLEAND, OH (WKBW) - The Buffalo Bills went through their second preseason game on Friday night with the hopes that they’d get some clarity about the quarterback position. While certain developments could impact how they move forward, at least one of them might not have been the one they wanted.

The Bills collected a 19-17 victory over the Cleveland Browns, but it was the individual performances that are weighed more heavily than the score between the two teams. Also, suddenly, the Bills now find themselves with questions on A.J. McCarron, Kyle Williams, and Trent Murphy moving forward due to injuries.

What was there to take away from the win over the Browns? Seven observations from Friday:

1) Josh Allen should get time with the ones
2) A tough night overall for McCarron
3) Taron Johnson may have pulled ahead
4) Edmunds shows signs but needs experience
5) Dawkins couldn’t find footing at left tackle
6) O’Leary shows up in a big spot
7) Cadet may have sealed his fate

Bills MVP: QB Josh Allen
- The stat line might not indicate it, but Allen made a definite step forward as a quarterback — to the point where now if the Bills were to work him in with the first-team offense, no one would question their methods. He looks ready for a chance to work with that unit more consistently than he has in the past.

Bills LVP: LT Dion Dawkins
- In all the defensive series against Myles Garrett, Dawkins could not get a handle of Myles Garrett at any point, and as a result, AJ McCarron had to run for his life in spots.

Up Next: The Bills return to practice on Sunday, August 19 in Orchard Park, NY.

1 – Josh Allen is improving
*2 – Run defense needs work
*3 – Murphy shows he’s multi-faceted

Cleveland -- Josh Allen has been gaining ground in the Buffalo Bills quarterback competition after recently getting promoted to the second team in practice.

The way Bills coach Sean McDermott has been bringing Allen along slowly early in the preseason seemed to be a strong indicator that the team was going to start A.J. McCarron or Nathan Peterman.

But Allen continues to look so good. The rookie got to run with the ones for a stretch in Friday night's preseason game against the Cleveland Browns. He didn't disappoint, and after McCarron suffered a shoulder injury in the game, the race may be down to just two horses.

The Bills held on to beat the Browns, 19-17.

These are the observations from the game.

Allen shows he's ready for more
A.J. McCarron struggles in start
Tremaine Edmunds still needs a lot of work
First-team defensive line is a mess
Offensive line plays poorly as unit
LeSean McCoy in the lineup
Taron Johnson may be moving up depth chart
Fumble could be costly for Travaris Cadet
O'Leary plays big with job likely on the line
After rough start, Peterman rights ship

The arrows have been retired.  Maybe.  I’ve been trying to find something different to call them that makes more football sense, so-to-speak.  So, after thousands of suggestions emailed, tweeted, and called in to me (not really, but I did have some), at least for this week I’m going with The Sticks, as in playing in front of or behind the sticks.  That’s what coaches and players like to say about moving the ball.  They’re either playing Behind the Sticks (negative) or Staying In Front of the Sticks (positive).  So let’s try it.  The Bills beat the Browns 19-17, so that means I start with the good.

IN FRONT OF THE STICKS
QB Josh Allen
QB Nathan Peterman
RB Marcus Murphy
TE Nick O’Leary
K Stephen Hauschka
Third down defense
DE Terrence Fede
S Siran Neal

BEHIND THE STICKS
First team offense

RB Travaris Cadet
K Tyler Davis
Run defense
2nd half Penalties

Give me one good reason why Josh Allen doesn’t deserve a chance to start Buffalo’s third preseason game next Sunday at New Era Field against the Cincinnati Bengals.

Are you struggling trying to come up with one? Yeah, you probably are. I wonder if Sean McDermott will be doing the same thing this coming week.

Here are some of my other observations:

Three things I liked

1.  Allen’s poise
2. Harrison Phillips.
3. The ongoing battle at tight end.

Three things I didn’t like

1. Buffalo’s first defensive series.
2. The offensive line.
3. McCarron.

His stock went up …

RB Marcus Murphy
LB Tremaine Edmunds

His stock went down …

C Russell Bodine
 LB Matt Milano

1- O’Leary impresses in second preseason game

2 – Dawkins confident in Bills offensive line

3 – Streater redeems himself with nice performance in Cleveland

Ninth-year pro Rafael Bush of the Bills critiques Browns rookie Baker Mayfield after facing the No. 1 overall draft pick Friday night in Cleveland.

Bush was asked how well Mayfield fared in keeping his eyes down the field.

“That’s probably something he has to work on,” Bush said. “At this point, he’s still learning. He’s a rookie. I think he does stare down his receivers and his targets.

Preseason Week 2 takeaways: Patrick Mahomes shows off arm; AJ McCarron fractures collarbone

The Bills' three-way competition at quarterback could quickly become a two-man race after AJ McCarron reportedly suffered a hairline fracture to his right collarbone Friday. McCarron started and failed to gain a first down in four offensive possessions, taking one first-quarter sack behind a problematic offensive line. Coach Sean McDermott could have a looming decision to make between Josh Allen (18-of-32 for 176 yards and two touchdowns this preseason) and Nathan Peterman (17-of-20 for 231 yards, two touchdowns and one interception). -- Mike Rodak

Cleveland Browns

The Browns' early success in the running game, gaining 73 yards in the first quarter, overshadowed what was an unspectacular night from quarterbacks Tyrod Taylor and Baker Mayfield. Taylor played four possessions, completing 4 of 7 passes for 22 yards, while Mayfield played from late in the second quarter until early in the fourth quarter, completing 7 of 13 passes for 75 yards. -- Mike Rodak

Thanks for putting this together!  My two biggest areas of concern after two games is overall  linebacker play and overall rush defense. Based upon observations thus far our LB group has to be in the bottom five of the NFL. Milano is having a bad 2nd season and Edmunds is still learning. Hoping we can upgrade when the rosters are reduced.

Very impressed with Allen and Murphy.

Not impressed with Ducasse and Milano.

Well what do you know, Josh Allen out shines Baker Mayfield in every category including completion percentage.
