The Case for Cornelius:

While most agree it’s not a matter of “if” but “when,” the former Crimson Tide linebacker has yet to make it past the semifinalist round for the game’s most prestigious honor

360971.jpg.0.jpg Bennett and cohort Bruce Smith formed one of the most feared pass rushing tandems of all time.

When one thinks back to the long and illustrious history of the linebacker position at the University of Alabama, a few names always come to mind. There was the tough and gritty, hard-hitting Lee Roy Jordan, one of Bear’s Boys. There was possibly the greatest ‘backer to play the game at any level in the legendary Derrick Thomas. There is a litany of more recent names from the Saban Era such as Dont’a Hightower, C.J. Mosley, Rolando McClain, and Courtney Upshaw. Some have made their marks on the pro ranks, while others remain works in progress.

But one former Crimson Tide linebacker who distinguished himself not only during his time at Alabama but as a prolific pro defender in the NFL is Bama’s beloved “Biscuit,” Cornelius Bennett. Bennett was easily one of the most heralded linebackers to play at the Capstone, and he parlayed that potential into a dominant career in the NFL which saw him play for a Super Bowl five times with two different teams. Bennett was a fixture on the Buffalo Bills “always a bridesmaid, never a bride” teams of the late ‘80’s and early ‘90s, when the Bills dominated the AFC but just couldn’t make it over the hump to get a Super Bowl ring.

He’s not HOF caliber.  He had a few very good seasons but didn’t develop the consistency to be considered among the greats.  Not every player makes the HOF

I'd say he had about 5 extremely good seasons for the Bills and that was when the Bills were in their prime going to Super Bowls every year. It might be a different story had the Bills won a couple of those Super Bowls but he didn't stay on to have the longevity Bruce, Thurman, and Andre had.  Biscuit was a huge component to the Bills success though, so many people forget about the season he had in 1991 when Bruce was injured most of that season and Bennett just wrecked havoc(he won AFC Defensive player of the year that season)

Personal life

On May 1997,[8] Bennett committed "vicious acts"[9] during a sexual assault of a woman at the Hyatt Regency hotel in Buffalo. He pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 60 days in jail for sexual misconduct. He was also placed on three years' probation, fined $500, ordered to perform 100 hours of community service, ordered to pay back $617 in medical bills for the woman,[10] and ordered to undergo anger-management and substance-abuse counseling.[11]

Bennett lives in Hollywood, Florida, with his second wife, Kimberly Bennett.[12]

In May 2010, Bennett announced he will donate his brain for a study of long-term brain injuries resulting from football-related injuries.[13]
